Supported by more than 40 years of practiced experience in business administration, Mr. Day has excelled as the chairman of Compass Diversified Holdings since 2006 and a board member of the Kirby Corporation since 1996. Throughout these roles, he has also served in myriad capacities for dozens of other organizations, including Teekey Corporation, Teekay Tankers Ltd., TK LNG Partners LLC, and TK Offshore GP LLC, for all of which he also held the post of chairman. Beginning his career as a shipping manager for Jardine Matheson Ltd. in Hong Kong and Taipei, Taiwan, from 1976 to 1978, he ascended the ranks to the post of the executive assistant to the director between 1978 and 1979. Relocating to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Mr. Day worked as the marine manager of Fednav Ltd. for the following two years.
Soon thereafter, Mr. Day found success as the executive vice president and the chief operating officer of the Navios Corporation in Greenwich, CT, from 1982 to 1987. He then held the position of vice president of Citicorp Capital Investors Ltd. in New York City for the two years undertaking leveraged buyouts before returning to Navios Corporation, where he remained active as the president and the chief executive officer for the next decade. In 1999, Mr. Day flourished as the chairman of the Teekay Corporation, where he maintained his involvement until attaining emeritus status in 2018.
Highly educated, Mr. Day graduated from the South African Merchant Marine Academy in 1967 and earned a Bachelor of Science in business science from the University of Cape Town in 1972. Traveling to England, he attended the University of Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship, where he obtained a Master of Arts in 1976. A veteran of the South African Navy, he completed service to the rank of sub-lieutenant in 1973. Among his notable achievements, he is most proud of sailing in the first yacht race from Cape Town, South Africa, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1971. Mr. Day also had a large liquid natural gas ship named in his honor recently, the "Sean Spirit."
To remain aware of developments in his field and community, Mr. Day maintains his affiliation with the Young Presidents' Organization, the Seattle Tennis Club, the Greenwich Field Club, and the Gulfstream Bath and Tennis Club. In 2005, he was designated as a commodore of the Connecticut Marine Association, and in 2019 he was awarded the Capital Link Shipping Leadership Award. As a testament to his success, Mr. Day was selected for inclusion in the 27th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Industry in 1991.
