Dr. Long is renowned as a surgeon and an educator with more than 55 years of innovation in his discipline. He initially pursued an education Jefferson City Junior College from 1951 to 1952. He continued his undergraduate education at the University of Missouri until 1955. Originally planning on seeking a career as a chemical engineer, Dr. Long explored the possibility of medical school when several of his friends enrolled, and he discovered an unexpected passion for neuroanatomy. He subsequently graduated from the University of Missouri in 1959 with a Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Long concluded his studies with a Doctor of Philosophy in neuroanatomy at the University of Minnesota in 1964.
Dr. Long completed an internship at the University of Minnesota Hospitals from 1959 to 1960, in addition to residencies in neurosurgery at the University of Minnesota and Children's Hospital Medical Center of Boston from 1960 to 1965. He served as a member of the United States Public Health Service at the National Institutes of Health from 1965 to 1967, before returning to the University of Minnesota as a neurosurgeon and an assistant professor of neurosurgery. Dr. Long later worked as an associate professor at the University of Minnesota Hospitals from 1970 to 1973.
In 1973, Dr. Long accepted a post at the Johns Hopkins Hospital as their neurosurgeon-in-chief and a professor of neurosurgery, which he held until 2000. He has maintained a practice specializing in neurosurgery serving the Baltimore area since 1973, and became the president of Neuroscience Consultants in 2010. Moreover, Dr. Long found success as a member of the Principal Staff at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory from 1976 to 2010.
Dr. Long has contributed his wealth of knowledge to numerous articles on neurosurgery and neuropathology, and has authored numerous book chapters. He is a founding member of the International Society for the Study of Pain and the Cervical Spine Research Society, as well as a founding editor of the journal Spine. His research resulted in the first implantable, programmable electrical neural stimulators and drug-infusion pump devices, and he participated in the introduction of glucosteriod treatment of brain edema. Dr. Long has been the recipient of numerous awards for his exemplary efforts in neurosurgery, including a 2018 Dandy Society Medal for Distinguished Achievement.
