Dr. Perez is a celebrated educator and administrator who retired from the Louisiana public school system after many years in the field. Originally working as an assistant director for Kindercare in Algiers, Louisiana, in 1978, she subsequently obtained positions as a special school principal, a teacher and a preschool specialist with the Jefferson Parish Public School System. She also served as IEP Facilitator and assistant principal in the St. Charles Parish School System. Dr. Perez excelled as a graduate and research associate at the University of New Orleans while developing the IFSP during her career. Later, she was an adjunct professor at Nichols University.
Dr. Perez found further success in consulting, providing her expertise to both Utah State University and the Early Intervention Research Institute in Logan, Utah. She also served as the assistant to the general manager and the children's program manager for Accent. Furthermore, Dr. Perez often contributed articles to various professional journals and presented at conferences in her area of expertise.
Knowing at an early age that she had wanted to teach children, Dr. Perez, an admirer of Hellen Keller, decided to specialize in special education. Once she became a teacher, it was the many small teachable moments such as using Conscious Discipline Strategies that made the biggest impact on herstudents. She was able to help children learn to function in their inclusive regular education classrooms. Special education was a very rewarding career choice for her.
Dr. Perez pursued an education at the University of New Orleans, receiving a bachelor's degree in 1978, a Master of Education in 1980 and a Doctor of Education in 1998. She holds several educational certifications, including principal, supervisor of student teachers, special school principal child search coordinator, kindergarten and non-categorical preschool education. Dr. Perez is also certified as a personal trainer, aquatic instructor, a lifeguard and in CPR and WSI.
Dr. Perez is a member of the Council for Exception Children, an association for special education professionals. She is additionally affiliated with Alpha Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Delta Kappa and Alpha Xi Delta. Recognized for her success, she accepted a Teacher of the Year Award in 2002 and an Excellence in Teaching Award from Chamber and Cox in 1994, among other awards. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Perez has been featured in Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who of American Women.
