A native of Kyoto-Japan, Dr. Kimura initially pursued an education at Kyoto University, earning a Bachelor of Technology in 1957. Four year later, he obtained a Doctor of Medicine from the aforementioned renowned institution. Moreover he traveled to the United States as a Fulbright Scholar in 1962 and completed a residency and fellowship in neurology with the University of Iowa between 1962 and 1968. Subsequently, Dr. Kimura began his career at the University of Manitoba as an assistant professor of internal medicine in 1969 followed by the post of an associate professor of neurology at the University of Iowa in 1972. After five years in this position, Dr. Kimura found successes as a full professor at the University of Iowa until his retirement as professor emeritus in 2013. During this time, he also served for 10 years as a professor and the chairman of neurology with Kyoto University, where he attained the designation of professor emeritus in 1998.
Dr. Kimura has more than 500 original publications, 78 book chapters and 11 books in neurology and electrodiagnosis. He also published a major text book, "Electrodiagnosis in Diseases of Nerve and Muscle" in 1983, with the fourth edition appearing in 2013. He has received an honorary membership from 25 national societies of neurology, neurophysiology and rehabilitation medicine. As a popular guest speaker, he has given just shy of 1000 invited workshops nationally and internationally on topics of neurology and neurophysiology. He served as President of American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) in 1985, Editor in Chief of Muscle & Nerve 1988-1997, President of the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology (!FCN) 1990-1993, Director of Japanese Society of Clinical Neurophysiology (JSCN) 1992-2001 and President of the World Federation of Neurology (WFN) 2002-2005. He received a 1995 Distinguished Research Award and 1999 Lifetime Achievement Award from AANEM, the distinction of Honorary Fellow from IFCN in 2001, Lifetime Achievement Award from WFN International Congress of Neuromuscular Diseases in 2006 and a Medal of Honor for Service to International Neurology from WFN in 2017. In 2018, the AANEM established a new "the Jun Kimura Outstanding Educator Award" in his honor.
