Dr. Myers is renowned as an optometrist, researcher, inventor and clinical professor emeritus who retired from teaching in 2015. During his illustrious career, he found success at the University of Missouri in Saint Louis, and the Departments of Ophthalmology at Washington University in St. Louis and Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Prior to this he had his own private optometric Practice Limited to Contact Lenses in Clayton, MO. He has held administrative positions with Bausch & Lomb, Inc. in Rochester, New York, and the American Optometric Association in Saint Louis.
Dr. Myers' entrepreneurial efforts from patents in research and development led to the development of several start up companies he co-founded and served as an officer or on the board. Compliance Contact Lens Corporation was formed in Toronto to develop a safer, limited used contact lens case. He also co-founded and participated on the board of Lensar, Inc. and Laser Sight in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Myers also was president of Sight Laser Technologies, Inc. in Saint Louis.
During his tenure at the University of Missouri, Dr. Myers was responsible for founding and working as the chair of the materials science symposium in the school of optometry between 1988 and 1992, which soon after continued for another eight sessions at Louisiana State University. Likewise, he co-founded the clinical research panel on campus. A seasoned researcher who has conducted approximately 40 research international presentations, Dr. Myers authored more than 50 articles to various scholarly journals and the author of the 2009 book "30 Year History of the International Society for Contact Lens Research." Notably, Dr. Myers has accrued 17 U.S. and international patents as inventor or co-inventor in ophthalmics and lasers. This includes three patents for the laser treatment for presbyopia and other refractive errors in the internal ocular lens, the laser treatment for cataract retardation and other eye diseases, and a safer contact lens case for programmed limited use.
Dr. Myers initially pursued an education at the University of Notre Dame, earning a bachelor's degree in 1966. He continued his studies at Indiana University, where he obtained a Doctor of Optometry in 1970. He also completed a research fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London between 1977 and 1978.
Beyond his primary responsibilities, Dr. Myers has co-founded two organizations that exist 40-50 years later. The American Optometric Student Association was founded in 1967 and he was its first president, and the International Society for Contact Lens Research in 1980 which he was an officer for 15 years. Also, he is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, he is a past president of the Saint Louis Optometric Association and the Southwest Illinois Optometric Association. He is currently serving on the board of the Optometric Historical Society.
Established in 1972, the Dr. Raymond I. Myers Outstanding Service Award, which was established in his honor, is presented annually to an outstanding contributor to national student activities through the American Optometric Student Association; it was since renamed the Founders Award in 2004. The endowed Dr. Ray Myers Student Leadership Award was also created and is provided annually for leadership to a graduating optometrist at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis. In 1998, he was recognized as a Menendez Memorial Lecturer by the Armstrong Research Laboratory at Brooks Air Force Base. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Myers has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
