Dr. William Ross Bentley has taught forestry at numerous higher education facilities since 1963.

With more than 50 years of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Bentley has taught forestry at numerous higher education facilities since 1963 and was recognized as a professor emeritus by the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in 1997.
Previously, he served as the principal of Salmon Brook Associates from 1994 to 2010, a member of the adjunct faculty at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies between 1990 and 1997, a senior program officer and a director at Winrock International from 1985 until 1994, a program officer at the Ford Foundation in India from 1983 to 1985, and a professor at the University of Connecticut from 1980 to 1984. Prior to these appointments, he was the manager of forest research at the Crown Zellerbach Corporation from 1976 to 1980, an associate professor and a professor at the University of Michigan between 1969 and 1976, an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1966 until 1969, and an assistant professor at Iowa State University from 1963 to 1966. Since 2003, Dr. Bentley has been active as the co-owner of Wilhelm Farm in North Granby, alongside his wife of 29 years, Ann Wilhelm.
Additionally, Dr. Bentley held consultant roles at the United States Department of Justice from 1981 to 1985 and George Banzhaf and Company in Milwaukee from 1968 to 1969. He contributed to the Forestry Research Advisory Council between 2000 and 2003 and from 1991 until 1993. Dr. Bentley was also affiliated with the Connecticut Forest and Park Association for seven years, beginning in 2003.
Born in Oakland, California, in 1938, Dr. Bentley was told from a young age that education was the route to a better life. In school, he quickly developed an interest in teaching, having experienced firsthand the positive impact his own educators had on him. He became involved in forestry because his father built a career as a grassland ecologist for the United States Forest Service. The day after he graduated from high school, he began a job as a forest firefighter and then later worked in forest ecology. He climbed Mammoth Mountain in 1951, which proved to be a spectacular excursion. It was at this site where Dr. Bentley met a Forest Service district ranger, who advised him to transfer from his current institution, Stanford University, to the University of California Berkeley as jobs within the field of forestry would be available after he graduated.
Dr. Bentley earned a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California Berkeley in 1960 and 1965, respectively. In between the aforementioned degrees, he also obtained a Master of Forestry from the University of Michigan in 1961. Dr. Bentley became a member of the Society of American Foresters in 1957, an organization with which he remains affiliated.
Beyond his primary efforts within the field, Dr. Bentley served on the board of directors for the Nitrogen Fixing Tree Association, the Granby 4-H Club, Holcomb Farm, and the McLean Game Refuge. He has found much success with his written works as well, having published a great number of books as a contributing author, such as "Forest Resources and Wood-Based Biomass Energy as Rural Development Assets" in 1994, "Handbook on the Management of Agroforestry Research" in 1990, and "Rural Resource Management: Problem Solving for the Long Term" in 1986. Dr. Bentley also contributed an article titled "Hotelling's Theory, Enhancement, and the Taking of the Redwood National Park," which was featured in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics in 1997.
Dr. Bentley has been recognized as a Fellow of the Society of American Foresters in 2007, a Fulbright Scholar from 1991 to 1994, a Bullard Fellow from 1975 to 1976, and a Schoen-Rene Fellow from 1960 to 1961. Upon reflection of his rewarding career, he is particular proud of receiving notes from former students stating that he had made a substantial difference in their lives, which he considered much more meaningful than any award with which he could have been bestowed. A father and a grandfather, Dr. Bentley enjoys farming, watercolor painting, and cooking in his spare time.
