She is a past chair of the nominating committee of the American Astronomical Society, has been a member of the scientific organizing committee of Commission 40 on Radio Astronomy of the International Astronomical Union, and served as chair of the IAU Commission 5 Working Group on Nomenclature for seven years. Dr. Dickel was also a tour speaker for the American Chemical Society and a Shapley visiting lecturer for the American Astronomical Society earlier in her career.
Drawing upon a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Mount Holyoke College, and a Master of Arts as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in Astronomy from the University of Michigan, Dr. Dickel previously served as a visiting astronomer in the Netherlands and Australia and was a longtime collaborator at the Los Alamos National Laboratory for nearly a decade. Earlier in her career, she flourished as a visiting fellow in the division of radiophysics at the Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organization in New South Wales, Australia, and a research associate in astronomy at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Dickel along with her husband, John R. Dickel (also an astronomer) have enjoyed entertaining students in their home over the years. Besides "make-your-own" pizza nights with graduate students, they hosted/worked with students from small colleges during the student's "January Term Research Opportunity" and were also "Faculty Friends" for over ten years for the Snyder Residence Hall on the University of Illinois Campus. In her spare time, Dr. Dickel enjoys ice dancing, having attained a US Figure Skating Association silver ice dancer in 2002, as well as cross country skiing, canoeing, hiking and singing in her church choir.
