David R. Cecil, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. David R. Cecil was recognized with a Distinguished Teaching Award from the Javelina Alumni Association of Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 1996 and 1997.

Now recognized as an emeritus professor, Dr. Cecil taught mathematics at Texas A&M University in Kingsville for more than 35 years. In addition to teaching various mathematics courses, he worked as the chair of the department and as the assistant dean of the college of arts and sciences. Dr. Cecil taught for nearly 45 years and notably held additional faculty appointments at Butler University and North Texas State University.

Furthermore, Dr. Cecil served as the president of the Texas Academy of Science, an organization that promotes scientific research in Texas colleges and universities, encourages research as a part of student learning and enhances the professional development of its professional and student members. Early in his career, he provided his expertise as a consultant to the Education Service Center Region II. Dr. Cecil also consulted for the U.S. Air Force Office of Science Research at the Wilford Hall Medical Center in Texas.

Dr. Cecil spent many years affiliated with the Kingsville Area Educators Federal Credit Union, for which he was a member of the credit committee between 1979 and 2006 and the board of directors between 2006 and 2015. Moreover, he authored "Debugging BASIC Programs" in 1984, of which a Spanish language version was published in 1989. He later co-authored "Probability" in 1993 with Stan Albert. Furthermore, Dr. Cecil has contributed his wealth of knowledge to numerous articles featured in mathematics journals.

Since his retirement, Dr. Cecil has been focused on creating 3-D artwork from paper in all shapes, sizes and colors. Dr. Cecil initially received a bachelor's degree at the University of Tulsa in 1958. He subsequently completed a postgraduate fellowship at Tulane University between 1958 and 1959. Dr. Cecil concluded his studies at Oklahoma State University, earning a master's degree in 1960 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1962.

An elected fellow of the Texas Academy Sciences, Dr. Cecil held multiple posts with the aforementioned organization, including as the vice president in 1999 and the president from 2001 to 2002. In 1980, he was a founding member of the Kingsville Computer Club. Dr. Cecil remains active as a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society.

Notably, Dr. Cecil accepted several fellowships from North Texas State University and Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He was also presented with a presidential grant from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He was further recognized with a TAMUK Arts and Science Teaching Award in 1995 and 1996 as well as a Distinguished Teaching Award from the Javelina Alumni Association of Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 1996 and 1997.
