Supported by nearly 40 years of experience in teaching Composition, English and Advertising, Dr. Miller served as a faculty member in the Department of English and a Writing Director for both Freshman Composition and Upper Division Writing at the University of California, Irvine (1985-1997, 2006-2009). Alongside and following these achievements, Dr. Miller served as a faculty member teaching upper division writing in the Communications and Advertising Department at California State University, Fullerton (1997-2009), and as a faculty member in the Department of English at Moreno Valley College. There, she taught many sections of freshman and sophomore composition, some online. Prior vocational endeavors included the creation of a series of Creative Journal Writing and intensive Inner Child private workshops. She also worked as a freelance editor and as a theater critic at the Los Angeles Reader.
Dr. Miller received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Riverside and a Master of Arts from California State University, Northridge. Further, she pursued graduate work at the University of Southern California and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in English Literature and Writing Theory from International College of Los Angeles in 1983, where her dissertation director was Dr. Deena Metzger. Dr. Miller, a skilled program developer and Writing Director, published several English and Composition Curriculum Guides, contributed papers to professional conferences, and penned the books "To the Far Side of Darkness," "No Self, No Problem," and "Cat Signs," all in limited online distribution.
Furthermore, Dr. Miller served on many teaching quality and instruction committees, on the Writing Board at UC Irvine, and worked as an editorial reviewer of the journal "Writing on the Edge" and as co-director of the California Writing Project at UC Irvine. Active in her community, she has served as a business coach for the San Diego Employers Association, sat on the Board of Directors of the Hospice of the Valley, and offered meditation classes for the Vipassana Support Institute, where she taught beginners the fundamentals of Insight Meditation.
In recognition of her success and longevity in the field, Dr. Miller has accrued numerous accolades. The recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award from Cal State Fullerton, she was also a fellow at Cambridge University, England and Universita per Stranieri in Perugia, Italy.
Dr. Miller highlights the accomplishments of the students whom she mentored over the years as a significant achievement. On a personal note, she would add that perhaps her most notable achievement was that, unexpectedly, she became a mother as a very young woman, yet she persevered, completing undergraduate and graduate school and going on to achieve a quietly successful career in spite of the odds against succeeding as a single mother. Her only son, Robert C. Funk, born in 1963, married the delightful Kimberly Adkins Funk in 1991, and became an accomplished amateur golfer. They parented two extraordinary athletes, Capron and Corey Funk, who came to be known as the FunkBros of YouTube fame with over five million followers. Dr. Miller smiles at how much good has come from marrying her high school boyfriend for long enough to birth a baby at the tender age of 17. Dr. Miller has shared this simple fact of her life with many a young college-age woman, inspiring them to push through obstacles and gain the skills they need for the lives they choose to live.
