A distinguished and well-respected member of the military, Mr. Cromer retired from his positions as the president of the Hughes Space and Commission Company and the president of Hughes Electronics in 1998. Previously, he was the commander of the Space Systems Division and the director of Space and Missile Test Organization in the Vandenberg Air Force Base from 1986 to 1991. Having progressed in his service from commissioned second lieutenant to commander of Space and Missile Systems Center, he held the rank of a lieutenant general at the time. Prior to helming the aforementioned divisions, Mr. Cromer took charge of payloads on the Space Shuttle for the Department of Defense from 1984 to 1986. He found earlier success as the Program Director for the Air Force Special Projects Office and of the Satellite Data Systems Program Office and as Test Conductor for Project Gemini on behalf of NASA.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Cromer pursued an education at the United States Naval Academy, earning a Bachelor of Science in engineering in 1959. He concluded his education at the University of Denver, from which he graduated with a Master of Science in electrical engineering in 1969. In addition to his professional and academic accomplishments, Mr. Cromer has contributed as a member of the board of directors for Universal Space Networks, Global Crossings, Aerospace Corporation, and Draper Laboratories.
Notably, Mr. Cromer is a fellow of the American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics and the recipient of an Oxford Cup from the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Moreover, he has received a Schriever Award from the Air Force Association and the Thomas D. White United States Air Force Space Trophy. To remain aware of any advances in his field, Mr. Cromer is a lifetime member of the Air Force Association and a past member of the International Academy of Astronautics, and the California Space Authority.
