Dr. de Nesnera is renowned as a psychiatrist and an educator with more than 30 years of specialization in general adult psychiatry. He initially pursued an education at the Johns Hopkins University before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in biology at New York University in 1978. In 1983, he earned a diploma in medical science from Saint George's University in Grenada. Subsequently returning to the United States, Dr. de Nesnera earned a Doctor of Medicine from Dartmouth College in 1986.
While completing his residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center of Hanover, New Hampshire, Dr. de Nesnera discovered his passion for the compassionate treatment of long-term and serious mental illness. Prior to his medical career, he worked as an escort interpreter for the United States Department of State in Washington, DC, from 1978 to 1986. From 1980 to 1981, Dr. de Nesnera served as a research assistant at Rockefeller University in New York City, a post in which he resigned to pursue his medical education.
Dr. de Nesnera accepted the position of an assistant medical director of the Weekend Intoxicated Driver Program of Hanover in 1987, rising to the role of medical director from 1988 to 1989. In 1988, he was active as a consultant psychiatrist to the Alzheimer's Disease Clinic of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, and the Hanover Terrace Nursing Home.
Dr. de Nesnera later found success at Dartmouth College as an assistant professor of psychiatry from 1990 to 2008 and as an associate professor since 2008. Since 1990, he has contributed to the New Hampshire Hospital in various capacities, including as president of the medical organization at the hospital until 2003, the director of the forensic psychiatry fellowship from 2001 to 2003, and the associate medical director from 2008 to 2016. Since 2016, Dr. de Nesnera has flourished as a chief medical officer of the New Hampshire Hospital.
Board-certified in addiction psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and forensic psychiatry, Dr. de Nesnera has been the recipient of numerous accolades for his work, including public education and advocacy grants from the American Psychiatric Foundation in 2004 and 2009. He was further presented with a Governor's Commendation from the state of New Hampshire. A member of the American College of Psychiatrists, Dr. de Nesnera has maintained his involvement as a legislative representative of the New Hampshire Psychiatric Society, where his outreach has been instrumental in crafting legislation inclusive of community members with long-term mental health support needs.
