Dr. Don Lee Fred Nilsen's most important achievement was becoming the co-founder of the International Society for Humor Studies at Arizona State University, alongside his wife.

Prior to this appointment, he served as an associate professor and a full professor of linguistics between 1973 and 2011. At the start of his career, Dr. Nilsen contributed as an assistant professor for SUNY Oswego in 1964, later joining the University of Michigan as a coordinator and teacher in 1966.
Dr. Nilsen further progressed to an instructor of English as a second language with the institution, a capacity he maintained until 1971. During this time, he worked as a linguist at Kabul University for two years. Consequently, Dr. Nilsen became the director of linguistics at the University of North Iowa from 1971 to 1973.
In addition to his primary endeavors, Dr. Nilsen also briefly contributed as an assistant professor of linguistics at the University of Redlands and an instructor of French at Eastern Michigan University between 1966 and 1967. Civically, he served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. A published author, Dr. Nilsen's written works include, "Pronunciation Contrasts in English," "Encyclopedia of 20th Century American Humor," and "Humor in British Literature from the Middle Ages to the Restoration," among several others.
A graduate of Brigham Young University, Dr. Nilsen earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1958. Shortly thereafter, he pursued a formal education at American University, where he received a Master of Arts in 1961. Dr. Nilsen concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Michigan in 1971.
Dr. Nilsen's most important achievement was becoming the co-founder of the International Society for Humor Studies at Arizona State University, alongside his wife. The organization held six conferences between 1982 and 1986, which alternated from the United States to other countries worldwide. Dr. Nilsen was also proud to have been the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of the International Society for Humor Studies and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Applied and Therapeutic Humor.
