With more than 50 years of experience in civil engineering to his credit, Dr. Nicholls became an authority in his field. He began his career as a surveyor at the United States Geological Survey in 1948, a survey instrument man at the United States Bureau of Reclamation in 1949, and a laboratory research assistant at the Bituminous and Concrete Materials Research Laboratories of the Bureau in 1950. Dr. Nicholls served as a concrete materials and metal structures inspector on the Missouri River Canyon Ferry Dam in 1951, a design engineer and construction supervisor for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Japan and South Korea from 1953 to 1955 and a chief materials engineer and a highway design engineer at Gannett Fleming, Inc., from 1957 to 1959. He ended his career in 1993 after 34 years as a professor of civil engineering in Newark, Delaware. Likewise, he was active as a consultant at the United States Army Construction Engineering and Research Laboratory from 1967 to 1969 and at Dames & Moore, Inc., from 1990 to 1992, as a geotechnical engineering and construction materials consultant for DuPont from 1960 to 2006, and a construction surveyor for Mission Aviation Fellowship in 1993.
Dr. Nicholls earned a Bachelor of Science with honors (upper 3 percentile of class) in civil engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1951, and Masters and Doctors degrees from Iowa State University in 1952 and 1957, respectively. He was mentored by Merlin Spangler and Donald Davidson in the study of soil stabilization. He completed postgraduate coursework at Lehigh University in 1962, Stevens Institute of Technology in 1963 and the University of Colorado in 1967. He was a registered professional engineer in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Iowa and Maryland.
Dr. Nicholls co-authored "Mathematical Foundations for Design: Civil Engineering Systems," with Dr. Robert M. Stark in 1972, used in various English-speaking countries, and including Spanish and Polish editions in later years.
He authored "Composite Construction Materials" in 1976 and edited and co-authored the American Society of Civil Engineers' "Structural Plastics Selection Manual" in 1984. He designed and constructed GPS autopilots for unmanned emergency supply drops, and holds seven patents. Apart from his career, Dr. Nicholls has volunteered in his field and community. He served as a consultant for airfield and hanger designs for Engineering Ministry International. Dr. Nicholls was active as a volunteer at Habitat for Humanity International in 1983.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Nicholls remains informed of the changes and advancements in his industry through relevant organizations. He is a member of the Operations Research Society of America, the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, the Transportation Research Board, and student membership in Tau Beta Pi, Chi Epsilon, Sigma Xi and Pi Mu Epsilon. Likewise, Dr. Nicholls is a fellow and lifetime member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, where he served as president of the Delaware Section in 1974 amd 1975. He enjoyed having helped many students throughout his career.
In light of his many achievements in the field, Dr. Nicholls has received a number of accolades. He won the University Outstanding Teaching Award in 1962. Dr. Nicholls has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the East.
