With 55 years of professional experience, Dr. Shaeffer retired as a cardiologist with Desert Cardiology Medical Group at the Eisenhower Medical Center in 2014 to establish the first and only Lipid Clinic in the Coachella Valley. He continues to practice medicine at Volunteers in Medicine which serves uninsured patients. Prior to moving to California in 1974, he served ten years in the United States Navy completing his naval career as chief of cardiology at the Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA.
Dr. Shaeffer graduated from Florida State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1960. He continued his studies at Washington University in Saint Louis, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1964. He is a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta and Alpha Omega Alpha, and a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Cardiovascular Medicine, and the American Board of Clinical Lipidology.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Shaeffer has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology. He is the author of research publications and has been active with the American Heart Association, as chair of the Southwest Region and president of the Desert division, California Affiliate, the Riverside County Heart Association. Additionally, he served as president of the medical staff and on the board of directors for the Eisenhower Memorial Hospital. He chaired the public policy subcommittee for the American Heart Association from 2000-2003 and the AHA Obesity Task Force from 2004-2006.
Dr. Shaeffer has been recognized for his contributions to medicine and the community. These include the American Heart Association Gold Heart Award (2010), AHA Physician of the Year Award (1996), AHA Volunteer-Advocate Award (2006), and AHA-California Affiliate Silver Distinguished Service Award (1985). Other honors included La Prensa Hispana Sol Azteca Award (1999), the American Medical Association Community Service Award (2002), the Jefferson Award (2005), Eisenhower Medical Center Auxiliary Physician of the Year (1999), and Most Outstanding resident Oakland Naval Hospital (1968). He was recognized with a U.S. Navy Commendation while serving at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
