A retired school system director, Dr. Syropoulos was born in Greece and arrived in the United States as a displaced person after his native village had been captured. Traveling over the Atlantic Ocean on his journey to the United States on his 17th birthday, he did not speak a word of English upon his arrival but managed to learn English well enough to earn a scholarship to Wayne State University even though he had had to enroll in first grade courses at 18 years old due to his lack of English language skills. After discovering that enrollment in the military would fund his college education, Dr. Syropoulos enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served from 1956 to 1958.
Initially interested in becoming a dentist, Dr. Syropoulos decided to pursue a teaching career after finding out how expensive dental school was. He earned a Doctor of Education, a Master of Education and a Bachelor of Science from Wayne State University. Employed in the Detroit Public Schools as a certified teacher in 1960, Dr. Syropoulos continued on in the aforementioned school system, serving in a variety of administrative roles after leaving his teacher position in 1966, including the department head from 1966 to 1967, the acting supervisor from 1967 to 1969, the research assistant from 1969 to 1974, the program associate from 1976 to 1997 and an assistant director from 1974 to 1976.
Dr. Syropoulos had been affiliated with the Detroit Public Schools for many years because he wanted to pay it forward to the people who had helped him after he arrived in the United States. He is inspired to help others who come to the United States from situations that are similar to his own. Although he is presently retired, he hopes to continue helping students for as long as possible, both academically and by granting scholarships.
Dr. Syropoulos currently excels as the president of Syropoulos Educational Consultants, Inc., a position he has held since 1997. He worked with the Michigan Department of Education as a school improvement plans consultant from 2008 to 2017 and as a principal coach from 2006 to 2010. During his decades long career, Dr. Syropoulos found success as a consultant at the Wayne RESA from 2004 to 2008 as an Achievement Specialist and as a charter school consultant at Central Michigan University from 1997 to 2004. He has been working as a School Improvement Consultant at Hamtramck Public Schools from 2006 to present.

He has accepted six national and international awards for his work at Detroit Public Schools in the Research, Evaluation and Testing Department of the American Research Association. In his spare time, Dr. Syropoulos enjoys playing golf and reading.
Dr. Syropoulos is a member of the Michigan Education Research Association since 1974. He has participated on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Association Supervision Curriculum in 1992 to 1997. He has been a member of the Association Supervision Curriculum Development (ASCD) since 1974. He has served the American Hellenic Education Progressive Association (AHEPA) in several different roles, including as an athletic director in 1992, as a Marshall in 1993, the treasurer in 1994, the secretary in 1995, the lieutenant governor in 1996, and the governor for the State of Michigan in 1997. He was also elected nationally as supreme governor for two years 1998 to 1999 for AHEPA Organization.
Dr. Syropoulous' civic activities include flourishing as a member of the church council from 1976 to 1986 at St. John Greek Orthodox Church, Sterling Heights Michigan, as Vice President in 1987 and as President in 1988. He provided his expertise to the modern Greek studies board of directors at the University of Michigan from 2000 to 2003. Dr. Syropoulos acted as the chairman of the AHEPA Education Foundation from 2002 to 2007. He has also served as the chairman of the Hellenic Cultural Commission from 2003 to 2005. He was also appointed and served as the member of the Board of Governors of the College of Education at Wayne State University from 2003 to 2004.He also served on the Board of Directors for the Hellenic Museum of Michigan from 2011 to 2013.
