Dr. Vallarta is a retired pediatric neurologist and associate professor with more than 35 years of service to her field. Raised amidst a family of doctors, she decided to enter medicine after losing her home and father, and being evacuated during the Battle of Manila in the Second World War as a child. She attended the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, earning an Associate of Arts in 1953, and graduated, with magna cum laude honors, with a Doctor of Medicine in 1958. Dr. Vallarta relocated to Montreal, and completed a Master of Science in neurology from McGill University in 1963.

From 1959 to 1962, Dr. Vallarta completed her residency training in pediatrics and neurology at Montreal Children's Hospital. She was a fellow in neuropathology at Montreal Neurological Institute from 1962 to 1963. She was Acting Director of the Cerebral Palsy Multidisciplinary Team, Research Associate in Genetics and Senior Neurology Fellow at Montreal Children's Hospital from 1963 to 1964. She was certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics in 1963 and in 1971, by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry with Special Competence in Child Neurology. From 1967 to 1975, she was a staff pediatrician and child neurologist at Rainier State School for the Mentally Retarded in Buckley, WA, a staff child neurologist and chief of the epilepsy clinic at Seattle Children's Hospital. She was a consulting child neurologist at the University of Washington Child Development and Mental Retardation Center in Seattle from 1976 to 1989. She was the first child neurologist in Tacoma, WA. She practiced child neurology with the Neurology and Neurosurgery Associates of Tacoma, Inc. and Mary Bridge Children's Hospital from 1974 to 1993. Dr. Vallarta was the founder and first medical director of the Neurodevelopmental Early Intervention Center at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma. In January, 2014, it was certified as one of three Pediatric Neurodevelopmental Treatment Centers of Excellence by the Neurodevelopmental Treatment Association in the USA. These facilities provide comprehensive interdisciplinary diagnostic evaluations, neurodevelopmental treatment expertise and follow up services for children who are at risk or have developmental neurological disorders or disabilities. Dr. Vallarta considers the Mary Bridge Neurodevelopmental Treatment Centers of Excellence in Southwest Washington and her expertise as a child neurologist her greatest professional achievement. In 1967 to 1973 she was a clinical instructor, then an assistant and associate professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at the University of Washington in Seattle. Since 1994, she has been an Emeritus Clinical Associate Professor.

Dr. Vallarta is the author of over 30 papers and 3 books. In 1996, her book "Caring for Our Special Children: Early Intervention Services" described the interdisciplinary team approach for the diagnosis and management of developmental neurological disorders. Her books which were published in 2008 and 2019 are anthologies about our professional and family achievements, core values, pearls of wisdom, our lives, successful aging, avocations and our legacy. She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, Child Neurology Society and Washington State Neurological Society.
