Prior to her current role, she worked as a senior researcher with the aforementioned school from 1984 to 1993. Dr. habil. Shulga began her career at the State Institute of Polymeric Materials Application in Land Reclamation and Water Management Organization as a junior researcher from 1974 to 1981 and a senior researcher with from 1981 to 1984.
Dr. habil. Shulga initially pursued an education with the Riga Polytechnic Institute, where she completed coursework in engineering and polymer chemistry in 1974. She successfully defended her doctoral thesis in Chemistry of High Molecular Compounds at the Lomonosov Moscow State University and was awarded the degree of Candidate of Chemical Sciences in 1982. In 1992, she subsequently graduated with a Doctor of Science in Chemistry from the Latvian Academy of Sciences. Dr. habil. Shulga concluded her academic efforts at the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry, defending her doctoral dissertation in 1998, earning a habilitation in Wood Chemistry.
Throughout her career, Dr. habil. Shulga has been celebrated for her exemplary contributions to her field. Notably, she was presented with the Bronze Medal at the Exhibition of National Economic Achievements of the USSR. Moreover, Dr. habil. (chem.) Galia Shulga accepted grants from the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations and the Latvian Council of Science.
