Dr. Massy is renowned as a professor and higher education consultant with more than 55 years of distinction in his field. He initially pursued an education at Yale University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1956. He continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating with a Master of Science in 1958. While a graduate student, Dr. Massy developed an interest in research and publication, and he returned to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1960 to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy in industrial economics.
From 1960 to 1962, Dr. Massy began his career as an assistant professor of industrial management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He later worked at Stanford University, as an assistant professor in 1962, where he later excelled as a professor from 1988 until being granted emeritus status in 1996. In addition to his teaching workload, Dr. Massy found success in a number of administrative roles for Stanford, including as an associate dean of the Graduate School of Business in 1971, the vice provost of research from 1971 to 1977, and the vice president of business and finance from 1988 to 1991.
Dr. Massy was active as the director of the Stanford Institute of Higher Education Research from 1988 to 1996, and a senior researcher for the National Center for Postsecondary Improvement from 1996 to 2002. Since 2008, he has focused his efforts toward higher education consulting, having previously flourished as the president of the Jackson Hole Higher Education Group from 1996 to 2008 and the senior vice president of P.R. Taylor Associates from 1995 to 1999.
Moreover, he is the author of numerous works on marketing and resource management for higher education, including the Frederick S. Lanchester Prize-winning "Planning Models for Colleges and Universities," published in 1981. He is a former member of the editorial board of the Journal of Marketing Research, and is a frequent contributor to industry publications. Notably, Dr. Massy is a former Ford Foundation faculty research fellow, and a member of the American Marketing Association, where he had maintained his involvement in a variety of administrative roles.
