During his tenure on campus, he served as the director of the systems science program between 2001 and 2011 and as the presiding officer for the faculty senate between 1995 and 1996. Before becoming a faculty member at PSU, Dr. Lendaris was an associate professor of systems science and the faculty chairman at the Oregon Graduate Center in Beaverton for two years and a senior research engineer and program manager for General Motors Corporation in the Defense Research Laboratories for eight years.
A consultant to various businesses throughout his career in his area of expertise, Dr. Lendaris has also maintained activity on the board of directors of the Accurate Automation Corporation since 1994. The company is known for their innovative, high technology approach to issues, and the development of the automation of land, sea and air platforms. It further specializes in advanced unmanned vehicles, transient voltage suppression devices and other supporting technologies.
A prolific author, Dr. Lendaris was a contributor to several books, including "Handbook of Applied Computational Intelligence," in 1998 and "Handbook of Learning and Approximate Dynamic Programming," in 2004. He also authored and co-authored over 75 scholarly articles and conference papers and was active on several editorial boards, including the International Journal of General Systems from 1974 until 2004 and the Systems Research Journal between 1985 and 1994. Among his civic and community roles, Dr. Lendaris served as the president and chairman of his local church's justice and human rights committee in Portland and was a choir director for the Greek Orthodox Church in Santa Barbara, California, and in Portland. He also contributed prolifically on the Oregon State Senate Task Force on Economic Development and was a member of the Portland Energy Commission's advisory panel.
An elected Fellow, past president and former board of governors of the International Neural Network Society (INNS) and a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Dr. Lendaris notably served as the general chairman of the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks in Oregon from 1991 to 1993. Organized by the INNS in cooperation with the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, it is the premier international meeting for researchers and other professionals in neural networks and related areas. Dr. Lendaris is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Institute of Noetic Sciences and the American Hellenic Education Progressive Association.
An alumnus of the University of California at Berkeley, Dr. Lendaris received a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science, and a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering in 1957, 1958 and 1961, respectively. He is a registered professional engineer in California and Oregon. Dr. Lendaris was a 1974 National Academy of Sciences fellow.
