As a child, Mr. Dewane intended to become a lawyer, but pursued engineering instead. He won competitive scholarships through the U.S. Navy, serving 4 years as a midshipman, 3 years on active duty in the Seabees and 4 years in the Naval Reserve. He resigned in 1964 at the grade of Lieutenant. He worked with Honeywell, Inc., for the majority of his career. Over the years, he held such roles as sales engineer, market manager, director of marketing planning, vice president of service engineering, vice president of business development, general manager, group vice president, president of space and aviation control, and president emeritus, a title he has held for two decades. Mr. Dewane's major accomplishment include leading the team that acquire the Sperry Aerospace Organization the development of two innovative products namely the Helmet Sight/Display and the Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Guidance System, and winning the role of major avionics supplier for the Boeing 777 aircraft. He also has utilized his considerable knowledge with his two corporations, Dewane Investments LLC and JJR Enterprises.
Outside of his primary endeavors, Mr. Dewane was a member of the NASA Aeronautics Advisory Committee, the APEC Satellite and Communications Committee, and the FAA Advanced Air Traffic Control Committee. He was also affiliated with the State of Arizona Governor's Technical Commission. Throughout his career, he dedicated his time to roles as adjunct professor of corporate strategy at Arizona State University, on the board of directors with the Asia Pacific Economic Council, and member of the Technical Advisory Committee on Transportation Equipment of the United States Department of Commerce.
From 1988 to 1991, Mr. Dewane was on the board of governors of the American Defense Preparedness Association. Furthermore, he was chair of the Director's Council of the 'Conference Board' from 1995 to 1997 and on the board of the Honeywell Foundation. He was active with the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, where he was director from 1983 to 1987, chairman of the forecasting committee, and chairman of the airport operations committee. From 1980 to 1988, he was involved on the aviation committee of the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce.
An expert in his field, Mr. Dewane holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin and the University of Minnesota, respectively. Moreover, he has earned certifications through the University of Wisconsin Corporate Leadership four-year program, the Aspen Institute Seminar, and he attended a specialized 3-week course on human relations at Harvard University. Mr. Dewane also attended a program management seminar at the University of Indiana.
Civically, Mr. Dewane acted as the vice chairman of the Community Long-Range Improvement Committee in Maple Grove, MN, from 1980 to 1981, as chairman of the Economic Development Commission from 1982 to 1986, and on the Political Action Committee with Honeywell from 1979 to 1983. He served the University of Wisconsin on the Dean's Industrial Liaison Council, on the Capital Committee for the College of Engineering, the Alumni Advisory Committee, and the Vision 2000 Leadership Committee. He served as the Dean's 100 Board and the Dean's Advisory Council at the University of Arizona as well as chair of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and Dean's Executive Committee and the National Board of Advisors at Arizona State University and a member of the Business School's Industrial Support Committee at Embry-Riddle University. He has also been on the board of directors of the University's President's Club at Arizona State University. Mr. Dewane served as a visiting professor at Arizona State University, the University of Arizona, and Embry-Riddle University.
Additional memberships of Mr. Dewane's included with the State of Arizona Governor's Technology Commission and Smart Beginnings Committee, the Strategy Council of the United Way of Phoenix, the Endowment Committee for Habitat for Humanity, the State of Arizona Council on Aging, and the Funding Committee for Volunteer Center. He was further associated with the Academy Advisory Board of Western International University, the Board of Western International University, the U.S. Department of Commerce's Munitions Export Committee,; and the OPEC Transportation Working Group. Mr. Dewane was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Success By Six, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Community in Schools.
Throughout his career he has been involved in community activities as well. Mr. Dewane was chair of the Industrial Liaison Council with Embry-Riddle Aero University, chair of the Honeywell Executives Community Consultants, honorary member of the board of Phoenix Foundation for the Blind, board member of the Executive Service Corporation of Maricopa County, and director of the Dewane Private Foundation. Additional affiliations include as a committee member with the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits and the Provost Club of Arizona State. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, he dedicated time to the Air Force Association, the U.S. Navy League, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and the Experimental Aircraft Association.
For his excellence in the field, he was honored as a Navy Scholar and was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Wisconsin and the U.S. Military Academy Community Service Award. A holder of four World Airplane Speed Records, Mr. Dewane also accumulated approximately 2,000 hours as a pilot in command. He has received the National Award from the Junior Diabetes Association and a University Recognition Award from Embry-Riddle University. Mr. Dewane helped coordinate plane transportation for Special Olympic athletes to the events.
He has been featured in Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Dewane intends to continue giving back to his community while maintaining his role as president emeritus.
