Robert J. Lackie was born December 24, 1966, in Wilmington, Delaware, but he grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. He attended Penn Wood Senior High School and excelled across the entire spectrum of high school activities: Athletically, Robert participated in football, wrestling, and track and field, and he was invited to attend the Junior Olympic Competition, where he placed third in the 1500 meter race with a time of 4:30.3 (impressive for a 15-year-old, but not good enough to move on to the finals!). Academically, Robert was appointed to the National Honor Society for two consecutive years and earned a place on the Distinguished Honor Roll every year. His accomplishments earned him the Penn Wood Senior High School Outstanding Achievement Award, and he graduated in the top five percent of his class in 1984.
After high school, Robert chose to enter the military to pursue a career in the United States Air Force (USAF). He entered the delayed enlistment program in April 1984 and began active duty in December 1984. After completing basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, in early 1985, Airman Lackie began technical training school as an aircraft maintenance specialist at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas, where he was chosen to be class leader and was an honor graduate in March 1985. After a temporary assignment to Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico to complete his field training detachment, Airman Lackie was assigned to Royal Air Force Upper Heyford in England to become an Assistant Crew Chief on his F-111 'Aardvark,' a General Dynamics multipurpose 'swing-wing' tactical fighter bomber aircraft capable of supersonic speeds.
While stationed in England, Robert was selected for below-the-zone promotion to the rank of E-4 Senior Airman, and he also earned several awards, including the 1987 Airman of the Year Award and the 1988 Non-commissioned Officer (NCO) of the Year Award for the 20th Aircraft Generation Squadron. Additionally, Robert completed NCO Preparatory School in October 1987 and earned the NCO Preparatory Course Distinguished Graduate Award.
Not only did his extensive, eclectic experiences overseas with the USAF and his numerous field study courses via the University of Maryland (University College: European Division) inspire him to pursue a career in higher education, but they also contributed to his acceptance into and graduation from the University of Oxford's British Universities International Summer Schools 1989 Programme (Oxford: Britain: Literature, History, and Society from 1970) as one of 120 students and professors from 30 countries—certainly a highlight of his early academic endeavors, and his time living in the UK. In 1989, Sergeant Lackie was transferred to Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina, USA, as a Crew Chief on his F-16 'Fighting Falcon,' a General Dynamics single-engine supersonic tactical fighter aircraft.
While stationed at Shaw Air Force Base, Sergeant Lackie continued his longstanding pursuit of education, earning an Associate in Applied Science in Aircraft Maintenance Technology from the Community College of the Air Force at Air University in 1989. In December 1989, he received the General Leo Marquez Maintenance Technician of the Year Award, in addition to graduating from the Tactical Air Command NCO Leadership School, earning four honors: the Distinguished Graduate, Academic Achievement, Communicative Skills, and Esprit de Corps awards. In 1990, he was promoted to E-5 Staff Sergeant and asked to complete his tour at Shaw as an instructor at the NCO Professional Military Education (PME) Center, teaching communicative skills, leadership & military history, and safety. His military service medals include the Air Force Commendation Medal, Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and National Defense Service Medal for his work as a Tactical Aircraft Maintenance Specialist—Crew Chief, as well as the Humanitarian Service Medal for service to Carolina residents during Hurricane Hugo recovery efforts.
In 1991, while serving as an NCO PME Instructor, Staff Sergeant Lackie completed an Associate in Applied Science in the Instructor of Technology and Military Science from the Community College of the Air Force at Air University, as well as an Associate in Arts from the University of Maryland, University College, European Division. In 1991-1992, he was selected as the Non-commissioned Officer of the Quarter for the 363rd Mission Support Squadron as a PME Instructor at Shaw and inducted into Who's Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges.
While finishing his enlistment with the United States Air Force in 1992, Staff Sergeant Lackie also completed his Bachelor of Science (English & Business Management), with honors, at Regents College, The University of the State of New York and was offered his first post-military contract teaching at the DuPont Plant in Camden, SC, for Central Carolina Technical College, where he taught pneumatics, basic math, and public speaking, while also teaching English / Business Writing part-time for Trident Technical College (TTC) in Charleston, SC. Robert also attended Charleston Southern University (CSU) in the evenings, where he earned 18 graduate hours in English in preparation for becoming a more valuable instructor.
While attending CSU and teaching as an adjunct instructor at TTC and CSU, Robert also tutored math and English and was awarded a Library & Information Science Graduate Assistantship at the CSU Mendel Rivers Library to help pay for his courses. He enjoyed working at the library and discovered that his teaching and computer skills worked very well in the library and information science field. Therefore, Robert accepted an entry-level Library Technical Assistant position at CSU to get more pre-professional experience in library science, and he applied for and received acceptance to the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program at the University of South Carolina (USC). In 1994-1995, Robert was awarded USC College of Library & Information Science Kenneth E. Toombs Fellowship, and he was inducted into Beta Phi Mu, The International Library & Information Studies Honor Society. In 1996, he earned his MLIS degree at USC, leading to his new career as a library faculty member (rank of Instructor of Library Science) at CSU. In 1998, Prof. Lackie accepted a position at the Franklin F. Moore Library at Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, as a Reference and Instruction Librarian (rank of Instructor-Librarian).
Prof. Robert J. Lackie, MLIS, MA, is currently a Professor-Librarian at Rider University in New Jersey, where he assumed a leadership role in the Franklin F. Moore Library Department as the Department Chairperson in September 2013. Prior to that, he co-led the Moore Library's Research Instruction Program for 15 years. Prof. Lackie has taught various undergraduate business communications, identity theft prevention, English composition, & public speaking seminars & courses; undergraduate and graduate library & information science courses; and hundreds of research instruction sessions within many academic disciplines, in addition to serving as Rider University's first Faculty-in-Residence from 1998-2002.
In 2000, Robert completed his second master's degree, a Master of Arts in Curriculum, Instruction, and Supervision, with distinction, from Rider University, while also earning the Curriculum, Instruction & Supervision Annual Graduate Award, the Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) Graduate Student Award, and induction into PDK, The International Honor Society in Education. He received a promotion to the rank of Associate Professor-Librarian, with tenure, in 2004, and then to the prominent rank of full Professor-Librarian in 2009.
A frequent presenter at library, education, and technology conferences, Prof. Lackie has given over 600 talks, workshops, or webinars on a variety of topics around the United States, and he has co-written or co-edited four books: Creative Library Marketing and Publicity: Best Practices (Rowman & Littlefield, 2015); Identity Theft: What You Need to Know [Kindle Edition] (Amazon Digital Services, Inc., 2014 and updated Prime edition, 2016); Teaching Generation M: A Handbook for Librarians and Educators (NY: Neal-Schuman, 2009, listed as one of VOYA's 2010 "Essential Books for Professionals Who Serve Teens"); and New Jersey Train-the-Trainer: Training Techniques for Library Staff: Course Book (NJ State Library, 1999). Robert has also been published within various professional and scholarly works over the last 20 years to include chapters within several books and articles within many conference proceedings, magazines, and journals, as well as an author of other creative works.
Active in various library, education, and technology organizations, Prof. Lackie is currently a LibraryLinkNJ academic library representative and an adjunct professor in the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program (sponsored jointly by the U.S. Department of Education & Rider University). For his teaching, writing, leadership, and service to the library profession, Robert has received several accolades, including the New Jersey Library Association 2014 Public Relations Award—Tech Shoutout Category, the Association of Colleges and Research Libraries of New Jersey 2011 Distinguished Service Award, the Applebee's Hometown Hero Award in 2010, the American Library Association 2006 Ken Haycock Award for Promoting Librarianship, the 2004 Rider University Award for Distinguished Teaching, and the New Jersey Library Association 2004 Librarian of the Year Award. He has also been included in recent editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
