Dr. Barteau is a tenured chemical engineer and an educator of more than three decades who boasts extensive experience in energy research. Accepting the position of the vice president for research at Texas A&M University in 2019, he is responsible for leading the university's division of research. The division is, notably, designed to deliver strategic support to further Texas A&M's research mission by facilitating collaborations to grow federal funding, strengthening the research infrastructure, promoting the value of research, encouraging commercialization partnerships and ensuring research compliance.

A former University of Michigan faculty member of six years, Dr. Barteau taught chemical engineering, was a DTE Energy professor of advanced energy research, the director of the University of Michigan Energy Institute, and a Dow distinguished fellow in sustainability. During his stay, he initiated the University of Michigan Energy Survey and Beyond Carbon Neutral, a university-wide initiative integrating technological, biological and policy solutions to reduce greenhouse gas concentrations. He also led the establishment of a comprehensive battery fabrication and characterization user facility. Additionally, Dr. Barteau contributed for 30 years at the University of Delaware, for which he served as the senior vice provost for research and strategic initiatives, chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering, director of the Center for Catalytic Science and Technology, and founding director of the University of Delaware Energy Institute. He also held the Robert L. Pigford endowed chair of chemical engineering, and was a professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

In related endeavors, Dr. Barteau has notably consulted for numerous industrial organizations, including Ford, DuPont, Dow, Hercules and Atofina, he has held visiting appointments at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Dr. Barteau has been a frequent contributor on energy and environmental perspectives to The Conversation, Fortune and National Public Radio as well.

Throughout the years, Dr. Barteau has focused his research efforts on chemical reactions at solid surfaces and their applications in heterogeneous catalysis and energy processes. He is especially proud to have been able to contribute to the very important studies of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine regarding carbon removal from the atmosphere and the utilization of waste carbon. Dr. Barteau's research has been supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and NASA.

Dr. Barteau received a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering at Washington University in 1976. Thereafter, he acquired a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1977, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1981 at Stanford University. Dr. Barteau was an NSF postdoctoral fellow in physics at the Technische Universität München in Germany. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Academy of Inventors and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Dr. Barteau is also a member of several other scientific organizations. Some of these include the American Chemical Society, the Materials Research Society and the Electrochemical Society.

In 2018, Dr. Barteau was awarded the Lawrence K. Cecil Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Other awards include a 1995 Ipatieff Prize from the American Chemical Society and a 1985 Presidential Young Investigator Award from the NSF. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Barteau has been featured in over 50 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
