CHESAPEAKE, VA, December 06, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Janet Carol Michalak, Ed.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Michalak celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Janet Carol Michalak, EdD, retired in 2004, earning the title of professor emeritus at Niagara County Community College in Sanborn, New York, where she previously taught as a professor from 1991 to 2004, associate professor from 1985 to 1991, assistant professor from 1982 to 1985 and instructor from 1980 to 1982. Before joining NCCC, she initiated many changes as a reading teacher in the Tonawanda School System in Tonawanda, New York, from 1971 to 1980. During this time, she also supervised tutors in the Clinical Program at Niagara County Community College. In 1980, she accepted a full time position at NCCC where she developed the Reading Clinical Program; developed and taught reading courses; served as: Coordinator of the Reading and Study Skills Department; Articulations Coordinator; Acting Chair of Humanities; and finally Coordinator of Childhood Education.

Developing a passion for learning at an early age, Dr. Michalak was motivated to try to instill that love in others. The prospect of lifelong learning excited her, and she couldn't wait to be part of it. Dr. Michalak decided to pursue her dreams first at the State University of New York College at Buffalo, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1970, a Master of Science in Education in 1971, and a Doctor of Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1981. She enhanced her professional standing by becoming certified in Nursery Kindergarten, Grades 1-6; Reading; and English 7-12 teaching in the state of New York, and by joining prominent organizations such as the College Reading Association, the International Reading Association, and the New York College Learning Skills Association. She continues to pursue her love of learning though extensive travel through North America, Central America, Europe and Asia; and attending classes through local colleges and One Day University. In addition to travel and lectures, she pursues her passion for art by attending art openings and supporting local artists. She continues to mentor many former students. Her goal is to encourage others to ask good questions, to be curious, and to think critically. She told the NCCC graduating class of 1991, "The difference between successful people and those who are not successful, is that successful people ask good questions." She hopes to inspire others to have a passion for life and to develop an intellectual curiosity which results in life long learning.

In light of her professional achievement, Dr. Michalak has gained recognition in the form of various awards and accolades. On April 30, 2004 she received the "Partnership Award in recognition of the depth of collaboration with Niagara University in the preparation of highly qualified professionals and for the enhancement of student performance." In 1991, she was the recipient of the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching from the State University of New York. Earlier that year, she received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development. She also was honored with a President's Award for Excellence in Teaching from Niagara County Community College in 1990. However, some of her most notable achievements include writing and receiving approval from the state of New York for the Jointly Registered Childhood Education Program with Niagara County Community College and the State University of New York College at Buffalo.

As a result of her husband, Dr. Gerald Michalak being diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's in 2005. Dr. Michalak is an advocate for Alzheimer's disease awareness and early diagnosis. Furthermore, she advocates for improved care for residents in memory care facilities.

She has previously been selected for inclusion in numerous editions of honors publications, including 19 editions of Who's Who in America, four editions of Who's Who in American Education, 18 editions of Who's Who in the East, three editions of Who's Who in the World and six editions of Who's Who of American Women. Though these accomplishments are impressive, she considers the highlight of her career to be the relationships she developed with her former students - many of whom remain in contact with her to this day.

Dr. Michalak was born on March 22, 1949, in Buffalo, New York, to mother Thelma Ruth Roesch Vukovic and father Theodore Vukovic. She is grateful for the mentorship of her father, who was very supportive of her. He had a great love of learning, which he passed on to her. She later married Gerald Paul Michalak on June 19, 1971, who has since passed away on December 24, 2018. They shared their love of teaching. His doctoral dissertation was on brain hemisphere research and how it facilitated learning. He was on the forefront of research looking at the left and right brain. He taught workshops and did international consulting but chose to stay in the classroom teaching 4th graders until he retired. Together, they had two sons named Nathan (Stacey) and Justin (Elena). Moreover, she is the proud grandmother of five granddaughters Elizabeth, Alaina, Avery, Arianna and Amanda.
