Dr. Gary Wiren is the author of The PGA Teaching Manual, which is the most influential book ever written on the subject of instructing golf.
NORTH PALM BEACH, FL, December 13, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gary Wiren has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Gary Wiren was introduced to the world of golf at age 10 by carrying his father's bag on a minimalistic nine-hole course in Omaha, Nebraska. Soon Wiren's golf career made a forward jump when at age twelve he was recruited to be what he now calls, "An irrigation engineer," or more accurately, the "night water boy." The golf pro/manager offered him fifty cents an hour and all the free golf that he wanted. Considering Dr. Wiren's amazing later career it is quite possible that this "start at the bottom" helped teach him the lessons that became so important to him in his storied future.
Utilizing the free golf gift from his job he soon become a respected player making all-state in Nebraska while attending Creighton University High School and later all-conference in college at Huron University in South Dakota. But those playing experiences would just be "lead ups" to his more important involvement in so many of the game's other aspects.
While getting a Master's Degree in Sports Science at the University of Michigan and a PhD at the University of Oregon he taught golf at each institution as part of his fellowship. Additionally, while at the University in Eugene, Oregon, he created, at the time, one of the largest golf schools in America (1962-1972). His success there while also serving as the director of education for the Pacific Northwest PGA, took him to being offered and selected for the position of National Education Director for the PGA of America in 1972...a move from having regional influence to "world-wide" influence.
In a career filled with highlights, Dr. Wiren is especially proud of founding the first Junior Golf Academy in the world based upon learning values (Honesty, Responsibility, Integrity, Perseverance, Sportsmanship, etc.) with the academy motto, "We train future leaders through golf;" Developing the PGA/USGA Rules Workshop program which has influenced golf officiating world-wide; Co-founder of the Professional Golf Management program, a 4 1/2 year business degree in golf operations, now at eighteen universities in America; he also developed a program of Recertification for all PGA golf professionals every three years to keep their business skills current or lose membership.
Beyond his administrative and founding accomplishments he was quite active in writing, teaching, speaking, collecting, and playing. Dr. Wiren has written fourteen books on golf, covering such subjects as the mental, The New Golf Mind, the first book on sport to deal with the differences in left brain and right brain thought; The PGA Teaching Manual, which is the most influential book ever written on the subject of instructing golf; When Golf is a Ball, anecdotal tales from his career that won the Best Golf Book of the Year in 2004, awarded by the International Network of Golf; and eleven more books beyond that with two more on the way. His writing has included magazine and newspaper articles published in over twenty countries.
The most noted aspect of Wiren's career has been through his teaching...teaching individuals and teaching teachers mostly in large groups. He has taught golf in 32 countries (including 17 years in Japan where he was sponsored by Mizuno, where he lead the teachers at 104 golf sites and had an instructional show on TV Channel 10 Tokyo); for three years he was a coach with the Italian Golf Federation's national team along with giving seminars to several other countries; He was selected as the U.S. PGA's Teacher of the Year in 1978, only the second year the award was given; and he is only one of 28 people to have been inducted into The World Golf Teachers Hall of Fame. Wiren is recognized in nine other halls.
As a speaker, Wiren's training came from four years of Inter-Scholastic debate and four more years of Inter-Collegiate debate. A much later highlight of his speaking career occurred when he was selected as "the individual" to serve as the Keynote Speaker at the First World Scientific Congress on Golf, held at St. Andrews University, Scotland, 1990. He has been featured at other Congresses in Canada, Australia, Italy, France, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Finland and Sweden.
Besides giving lectures on the many aspects of playing and teaching the game, he frequently speaks to private golf clubs, colleges, and golf associations on the historical aspects of the game. Dr. Wiren has one of the most interesting historical private golf museums in America and has hosted Bill Gates and Warren Buffett in his home to see it. He is a founding member of what is now The Golf Heritage Society, number 19 of an original 25, that has reached over 8,500 participants over the years.
With all of his involvement in so many aspects of the game there was not a lot of time left for competing. Nonetheless, Dr. Wiren won the World Hickory Shaft title in 1978, finished in the top ten on a Japanese Professional Sr. Tour event, won the S. Florida Sr. PGA title, made the cut in the US Sr. Open at Pinehurst in 1990 setting a record by carrying his own bag 72 holes. He also won the S. Florida Long Drive Championship, using a wooden headed driver and smashing a drive 381 yds. 1 ft. to win by 50 yards over second place, a national record between first and second place.
For the remainder of his career while at Trump International, Wiren wishes to share with people through writing, speaking, performing, and the use of the internet and social media, the importance of understanding and employing the first line of his very first published book, which reads. "Golf is a game, and as such, is meant to be enjoyed."
