BROOKHAVEN, GA, December 13, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Patricia D. Shearer, MD, MS, FAAP, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Shearer celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field

With over four decades of professional experience, Patricia D. Shearer, MD, MS, FAAP, has excelled as the site lead physician of hospice and palliative medicine with the Emory Palliative Care Center at Emory Johns Creek Hospital in Johns Creek, Georgia, since August 2018. She was previously the physician champion at the David Raines Community Health Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. Between 2008 and 2012, she was the founding director for cancer survivor programs at the University of Florida Health Shands Cancer Center, the department of pediatrics at the College of Medicine at the University of Florida, and the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Prior to her current work in hospice and palliative care, Dr. Shearer spent nearly three decades in the field of pediatric oncology. From 2011 to 2012, she was professor and chief of pediatric hematology/oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. She previously contributed in other administrative and clinical roles with the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the College of Medicine of the University of Florida, Ochsner Health Systems and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, among others. Furthermore, she has provided her expertise in academic positions with a number of prestigious universities, including Tulane University, the University of Tennessee and the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine.

Extensively published in her field, Dr. Shearer has published articles in both print and online journals, contributed papers to symposiums, and written chapters for textbooks as well as book review and abstracts. Some of her most notable and formative papers are "Hemizygous Deletions of Chromosome Band 16q24 in Wilms Tumor: Detection by Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization," "Meeting Report of the 2000 International Congress of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology," "Head-to-Head Comparisons of Quality of Life Instruments for Young Adult Survivors of Childhood Cancer" and "Auditory Late Effects of Childhood Cancer Therapy." These four papers reflect the key points in Dr. Shearer's career: translational research in pediatric oncology, international medicine and quality of life of cancer survivors.

Out of everything she has accomplished in her career, Dr. Shearer considers her greatest achievement to be influencing the health and wellbeing of patients and their families through the practice of medicine. She feels success can be defined by the ability to "influence for good." This includes benefitting patients and their families, one's colleagues, and the larger sphere of state, national and international communities. Her goal in her career is to work with integrity, honor and excellence in clinical care, academics and research. She hopes that her legacy will be one of a Christian professional who lived her life with these attributes.

Greatly influenced by Winston Churchill and her father, Alton Dunaway, Dr. Shearer was inspired by their tenacity and strength as well as their perseverance through adversity to change the world. She began her studies with the University of North Carolina Greensboro, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in speech pathology in 1973. She went on to earn a Master of Science in audiology at Tulane University with the thesis "Stapedial Reflexes: Electrophysiological Correlates and Clinical Applications" in 1975, before receiving her Doctor of Medicine through the School of Medicine at Louisiana State University in 1986. She is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Following these accomplishments, Dr. Shearer furthered her studies with an internship and residency in the department of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1986 to 1989 and a postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee from 1989 to 1992. Continuing to learn throughout her career, she completed a fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in 2018.

Widely recognized in her field, Dr. Shearer has received numerous awards over the years. She has been recognized with seven Teacher of the Year awards from various institutions such as the Mayo Clinic and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Additionally, she was honored to be appointed as panelist on the pediatric subcommittee of the Oncology Drug Advisory Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration from 2011 to 2016. This came from the distinction of being the only known audiologist and pediatric oncologist in the world. Above all the formal accolades she has received, Dr. Shearer considers the most important recognitions to be the quiet words of appreciation at the bedside from the patients and families who have been impacted by her care.

With passions for vocal performance and medicine, Dr. Shearer is proud to have been able to pursue all of her interests. She has no regrets about the trajectory of her career. Feeling that the choice of a career in medicine is usually based on one's instinctive desires, drives and talents, she has stayed in the profession because she feels that it is a calling and that being a physician is a permanent mindset. To anyone looking toward a career in medicine, Dr. Shearer would encourage them always to do the right thing to the best of their ability to discern the proper course of action and the rest will take care of itself.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to her profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Patricia D. Shearer, MD, MS, FAAP, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
