From 1969 to 1972, Mr. Rivers worked as a sales representative for Holt, Rinehart, & Winston, Incorporated in New York, rising to the post of an editor from 1973 to 1976. He later served as an editor for the William C. Brown Company in Dubuque, IA, from 1976 to 1978. From 1978 to 1985, he found success as a sales manager of national accounts with Better Homes and Gardens Books, a division of the Meredith Corporation of Des Moines, IA. Mr. Rivers further flourished as the director of national accounts with the aforementioned company from 1985 to 1987.
The director of national accounts for XLM Company from 1988 to 1989, Mr. Rivers excelled as the vice president of sales for Steelworks of Des Moines, IA, from 1989 to 1994. He briefly was active as the vice president of sales and marketing for Enviro Industries before transitioning to a consulting role with Rivers & Associates, which he has held since 1995. In his leisure time, he is an avid runner. He is the recipient of the Howard Cowper Award for best four-year athletics record from Drake University.
