Subsequently, Mr. Smyth served his country through his enlistment with the United States Army from 1951 to 1953.
Following his military service, Mr. Smyth began his career with the Wheeling Stamping Company as a marketing representative, quickly ascending to the head of a multistate area. Turning down the opportunity to become vice president of sales for the company, he decided to pursue a Master of Science in psychology at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, which he obtained in 1958. From 1958 to 1971, Mr. Smyth worked as personnel director of Celanese International of New York City.
Additionally, Mr. Smyth was active as the manager of organization and manpower for General Electric Company of New York City from 1971 to 1973 and the senior vice president of human resources for Northwest Bancorp in Minneapolis, from 1973 to 1982. In 1983, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he held the position of the senior vice president of California Federal Savings. Mr. Smyth would later accept the post of the vice president of Career Transition Group of Los Angeles, where he remained from 1985 to 1987.
Mr. Smyth excelled as the president of Fuchs, Cuthrell & Company, Incorporated, later known as Fuchs & Company, from 1987 to 1994. He further flourished as the president and the chief executive officer of Smyth, Fuchs, & Company from 1995 to 2002. Mr. Smyth found success as the vice president of Spherion from 1998 until his retirement in 2005.
