With more than 65 years of experience to her credit, Dr. Forte is a lauded musician, pianist and musical educator who has thrilled myriad audiences across five continents with her interpretations of iconic classical compositions. Motivated and mentored by her aunt, Sonia, who began teaching her to play the piano before the age of 4, she began her illustrious career in the performing arts in 1952, debuting at the age of 13 at a Beethoven festival in Vichy, France, which was met with a lengthy ovation and rave reviews. In the decades since, Dr. Forte has become quite accomplished as a recording artist, having notably appeared on NBC Television in New York, Radiodiffusion-Television Française in Paris, Television O Globo in Rio-de-Janeiro, Radio Television Buenos Aires and Radio Warsaw.
Furthermore, Dr. Forte has flourished as a performer who toured alongside her late husband, Allen Forte, as well as through solo recitals around the world. In addition to a residency at the University of North Texas in 2005, she has performed at such prestigious locations as the International Music Festival at Yale University, the Conservatory of Music in Oslo, Norway, the Eastman School of Music and Château de Goulaine in Nantes, France. A founding member of the Bel-Être Ensemble and the Lillibridge Ensemble, Dr. Forte has notably collaborated with Polish cellist Mariusz Skula for a number of concerts, known as the Bel-Être Ensemble.
Moreover, Dr. Forte has held the designation of a professor emerita of piano at the Morrison Center for the Performing Arts in Boise State University since 1997. Prior to this appointment, she excelled as a professor of piano at the aforementioned university from 1971 to 1997. During this time, she directed the "Pianist in Residence Program" from 1979 to 1997, and the "Foreign Student Scholarship Program" from 1993 to 1997; she created full scholarships for 16 foreign students at BSU. Her Utah student Linda Jo Whitman, 1976 Graduate, wrote: "I AM SO LUCKY AND BLESSED TO HAVE STUDIED WITH YOU! YOU HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE AND FOR THAT I WILL ALWAYS BE GRATEFUL! PLUS I JUST LOVE YOU."
While in the midst of her professional path, Dr. Forte pursued an education at The Juilliard School with a full scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Music in 1970. She continued her academic efforts with a Master of Science at the Juilliard School in 1971. Following these accomplishments, she concluded her studies at New York University in 1984, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy. Holding a master teacher certificate from the Music Teachers National Association, musicology and artist diplomas from the École Normale de Musique in Paris and an artist diploma at the Frédéric Chopin Academy of Music, Dr. Forte conducted additional training under such lauded musicians as Alfred Cortot, Wilhelm Kempff, Norbert Dufourcq, Zbigniew Drzewiecki, Rosina Lhevinne and Martin Canin.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Forte has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. A prolific lecturer, she contributed masterclass presentations to a number of global institutions, including the University of Western Ontario, the University of North Texas, Hanyang University, the Johns Hopkins University, the Musashino Academy of Music and Hong Kong Baptist University, among others. Dr. Forte has also held the position of a visiting professor at the University of Oregon in 2002, the University of Washington in 2004 and the University of British Columbia in 2004.
Dr. Forte found success with her written works as well, initially penning such articles as "A Summer with Wilhelm Kempff" in Clavier in 1970 and "The Naked Face of Talent: Rosina Lhevinne" in the American Music Teacher in 1981. She subsequently authored her first book, "Olivier Messiaen: the Musical Mediator," which was published by Farleigh Dickinson Press in 1996. Most recently, Dr. Forte's autobiography, "Simply Madeleine: The Memoir of a Post-World War II French Pianist," was published via AuthorHouse in 2011, sharing her story of overcoming a number of challenges in her youth to achieve artistic success and personal happiness. "Simply Madeleine" has since been translated in both German and Italian.
The artistic director for Roméo Records, Dr. Forte has recorded her exceptional performances on many records, including "Maurice Ravel" in 1998, "Madeleine Forte Records Chopin" in 1999, "Claude Debussy" in 2000, "Olivier Messiaen" in 2001 and "Frédéric François Chopin" in 2002. She additionally released such albums as "Barber, Bartók, Liszt, Beethoven" in 2003 and "A Celebration of Duo-Piano Music" in 2006, which have attracted attention worldwide. For her countless musical achievements, Dr. Forte has been profiled by such industry periodicals as Fanfare and the Polish Music Newsletter.
In addition to her primary vocation, Dr. Forte remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She has maintained her involvement with the American Liszt Society and Mu Phi Epsilon. A visiting Hendon fellow at Yale University, she was also a fellow of Silliman College at Yale University, the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities throughout the late 1990s. Obtaining prizes from international competitions in Italy, Spain and Brazil, to name a few, Dr. Forte donated the Allen and Madeleine Forte Memorial Collection, consisting of the papers, books, scores, photos, recordings and memorabilia of her and her husband, to the University of North Texas Library.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Forte has accrued several accolades throughout her impressive career. Recognized as a guest pianist by the First National Symposium of Musical Analytics at the Shanghai Conservatory in 2009, she was honored with a "Mad About Madeleine" piano party at Boise State University in 2011, at which a Steinway grand piano was dedicated in her honor by the Boise State University Advancement and Alumni Association. Further celebrated by Yale University in 2013, she has been presented with the Josef Lhévinne Memorial Award and the Idaho Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts.
