After accompanying his father, a cardiologist, to work for many years, Dr. Kalra became enamored with talks and presentations regarding cutting-edge technology in the field, which cemented his decision to pursue a similar career path. In the early years of his career, he gained valuable experience as a resident physician at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Cooper University Health Care. Subsequently, he completed a number of fellowships in cardiology and sub-specialties at the Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, and Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center between 2012 and 2017. During the following year, Dr. Kalra parlayed his expertise to students at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine as an assistant professor of medicine and as an interventional cardiologist for University Hospitals in Cleveland, prior to his current position at the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Heart and Vascular Institute at the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Kalra has maintained a number of roles in the field, including the chief executive officer of makeadent.org, a non-profit startup that aims to "make a dent" in the delivery of health services in the United States and abroad. Additionally, he excels as the director of Barry J. Maron Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center in India, the associate editor of Global Heart: the Official Journal of the World Heart Federation, the editor-in-chief at Radcliffe Cardiology, the senior editorial advisor of JACC: Case Reports and an assistant professor of medicine for the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine.
An expert in his field, Dr. Kalra holds a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Indira Gandhi Medical College and completed the Safety, Quality, Informatics & Leadership program at Harvard University. In 2021, he also aims to complete a Master of Science in health economics, outcomes and management in cardiovascular sciences at the London School of Economics & Political Science. Throughout his career, Dr. Kalra has furthered his knowledge in the field with certifications through the American Board of Internal Medicine, the National Board of Echocardiography and Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Kalra maintains his professional affiliation with a number of organizations, including the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, the American College of Cardiology Interventional Writing Group and Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality & Outcomes in order to remain up-to-date with changes in the field. With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, he has contributed to industry publications, such as "Clinical or Symptomatic Leaflet Thrombosis Following Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: Insights from the U.S. FDA MAUDE Database" and "Continuity Clinics: Indispensable to Medicine but Extraneous for Interventional Cardiology Fellows." Due to his outstanding achievements, Dr. Kalra accepted the Best Cardiovascular Team Poster Award from the American College of Cardiology, a Chief Fellow Award from Alpha Omega Alpha, an Award for Clinical Research Excellence from the division of cardiology at Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center and a Richard E. Clark Memorial Paper Award from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, to name a few.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Kalra intends to remain active with Cleveland Clinic. Likewise, he hopes to become involved with the heart-valve program that is currently being built at a regional hospital in Akron, Ohio. In addition, Dr. Kalra wants to participate in clinical investigations that move the field forward in a substantial way.
Dr. Kalra is also a podcaster and a poet. He is the host of the cardiology podcast show, Parallax, available at Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud and Spotify among other platforms. His first poetry book, titled Ibadah, is slated for release on Valentine's Day, 2020.
