Leveraging more than 35 years of professional experience as an attorney in Charleston, Judge Zak was appointed to the bench of the 11th Family Court Circuit in Kanawha County, West Virginia, in 2014 and to the seat in 2016. He formerly served as a senior partner at Zak and Associates, an associate and partner at Preiser and Wilson, L.C. and a staff attorney for the Public Service Commission of West Virginia. Some of his noteworthy roles have included serving as a special assistant attorney general from 1980 to 1987 and a special commissioner for the Circuit Court of Kanawha County between 1984 and 1992. He also served on the as a hearing examiner for the West Virginia Board of Medicine and was a member of the Workers Compensation Appeals Board and was a hearing examiner for the West Virginia Board of Regents. Additionally, Judge Zak was the chairman of the West Virginia Support Enforcement Commission.
An alumnus of West Virginia University, Judge Zak received both a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1968 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1975. Just after being accepted to law school, he served three years in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and Germany, from 1969 until 1972. He has been admitted to practice by the West Virginia State Bar, the U.S. District Courts of the Northern and Southern Districts of West Virginia, the U.S. Court of Appeals of the Fourth Circuit and the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia. An elected fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, Judge Zak is also a member of the national honorary organization, the Order of Barristers.
