In 1970, Mr. Chaffee began his career as a researcher for the Washington bureau of the Baltimore Sun. From 1976 to 1977, he served as an assistant to the press secretary for Representative Marc L. Marks, and as an assistant to the president of International Management Resources Corporation of Washington from 1978 to 1979. Mr. Chaffee later worked as an editor and an assistant publisher for City Life Magazine from 1980 to 1981 and an editorial consultant for the Almanac of American Politics from 1981 to 1985.
Mr. Chaffee served in the administration of President Ronald Reagan as a speechwriter for the Office of Public Affairs of the Bureau of Housing and Urban Development from 1984 to 1989. From 1991 to 2008, he was the arts and features editor at the Washington Times. Mr. Chaffee has found success as the senior editor at Washington Life Magazine since 2004 and a senior advisor at Qorvis Communications since 2008.
In addition to his career in publishing, Mr. Chaffee is passionate about dance and theater performance. He had made an impact within these fields as a director for the Source Theatre in Washington from 1982 to 1990 and the Montesquieu Foundation in Paris from 1988 to 1992. Conducting significant fundraising and consulting in the performing arts, Mr. Chaffee is responsible for a successful fundraising campaign for the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Mr. Chaffee has been additionally active as a consultant for clients as diverse as Paul Schrader Productions in New York, at the Center for Public Integrity, the Citizens Research Foundation, and C-Span Cable Network.
