Prior to this appointment, he held multiple positions with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, including as an assistant professor of microbiology from 1987 to 1991, an associate professor of microbiology from 1991 to 1996 and a professor from 1996 to 2018. Previously, he served as an assistant professor at Washington State University from 1984 to 1987. Dr. Inzana began his career with a postdoctoral fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston from 1982 to 1984.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Inzana pursued his education at the University of Georgia, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1975. He continued his academic efforts at the aforementioned university with a Master of Science degree in 1978. He concluded his studies at the University of Rochester in 1982, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy degree. In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Inzana is a diplomat of the American Board of Medical Microbiology, an honorary diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists, a Fellow of the American Academy for Microbiology, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Dr. Inzana has participated in numerous endeavors related to his professional circles. Since 1985, he has intermittently contributed to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health as a grant reviewer. Moreover, he was the director of the clinical microbiology laboratory at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine teaching hospital. Dr. Inzana further flourished at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University as the university research integrity officer from 2007 to 2018, the associate vice president for research from 2006 to 2010, and he held the Tyler J. and Frances F. Young endowed chair in bacteriology from 2003 to 2018.
Dr. Inzana has found success with his written works as well, having authored chapters in "Diagnostic Procedures in Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology" in 1990 and the ninth edition of "Topley and Wilson's Microbiology and Microbial Infections" in 1998. In addition, he authored chapters in and edited or co-edited the books: "Histophilus somni: Biology, Molecular Basis of Pathogenesis, and Host Immunity" in 2016, and the first and second editions of "Manual of Commercial Methods in Clinical Microbiology" in 2002 and 2016, respectively. Overall, Dr. Inzana has written or edited over 32 books or book chapters, penned over 120 peer-reviewed articles for professional journals, and authored over 260 presentations at scientific conferences. He has served as a member of the editorial board for Veterinary Research Communications, Clinical Vaccine Immunology, Journal of Clinical Microbiology, and Clinical Microbiology Reviews. He has provided his wealth of knowledge as a reviewer for the Journal of Infectious Diseases, Infection and Immunity, Journal of Bacteriology, Journal of Clinical Microbiology, Veterinary Microbiology, and many others.
Furthermore, Dr. Inzana has been on or remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. From 1997 to 2001 he was on the founding subcommittee on veterinary antimicrobial susceptibility testing for the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards. He is a long-time member of the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases, the American Society for Microbiology, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Inzana has served as the chair or a member of organizing committees for several international scientific conferences.
Dr. Inzana is also an educator, having taught microbiology and clinical microbiology to veterinary students and graduate students for over 34 years.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Inzana has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. Among his many professional highlights, he is incredibly proud of his patented work, including a vaccine for swine pleuropneumonia, which was later commercialized. In 1989, he was presented with the Beecham Award and in 2003 the Pfizer Award for research excellence from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine.
