Dr. Koppa is an industrial engineer and educator with more than 55 years of excellence in his field. Originally, a psychology major, he developed a fascination with engineering after reading a book, which included chapters regarding engineering psychology. Dr. Koppa attended the University of Texas, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1958 and a Master of Arts in 1960. Following these accomplishments, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree by Texas A&M University in 1979.
From 1961 until 1967, Dr. Koppa was a human factors engineer for LTV Aerospace Group in Dallas. He continued his career as a crew performance specialist for GE between 1967 and 1972. Since 1979, he has been an independent engineering consultant. At GE in support of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, he was one of a small group responsible for to helping to train Apollo astronauts for extravehicular activity on the moon. In 1973, he began his career with Texas A&M University as an assistant research psychologist, rising to the position of an associate research psychologist in 1979 and an associate research engineer from 1982 to 2001. Dr. Koppa served as the head of the human factors division of the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University from 1977 until 1991. His work with the Texas A&M Transportation Institute was primarily centered on the development of adaptive and assistive technologies for use by disabled drivers.

He is the author of a chapter in "Transportation in an Aging Society: Ten Years of Experience," published in 2004, "Automotive Engineering and Litigation," released in 1988, and the co-author of several additional works. Among other accolades, Dr. Koppa is the recipient of the 1969 Apolloneer Award from GE. He is a fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers.
