From a young age, Ms. Petree knew that she wanted to dedicate her career to helping others. Her older sister was an obstetrics nurse and two of her friends were anesthetists, who allowed her to accompany them to work. Observing the care and importance involved in anesthetic nursing, Ms. Petree determined that anesthesia was the pinnacle of nursing and that she would pursue this specialization.
Initially, Ms. Petree earned a diploma from the Davis Hospital School of Nursing in 1970. She subsequently became certified by the North Carolina Baptist Hospital School of Anesthesia in 1974 in order to achieve her goal. Presently, Ms. Petree maintains her status as a certified registered nurse anesthetist within the state of North Carolina.
Ms. Petree considers her time at Wake Forest North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem to have been the most gratifying time in her career. She began her tenure at the hospital in 1994 as a staff anesthetist. Additionally, she has served as the owner of Copper Kettle Anesthesia Services; associate director of nurse anesthesiology since 2000. Ms. Petree's previous positions within the Wakeforest North Carolina Baptist Hospital include an assistant director of nurse anesthesiology from 1997 to 2005, a clinical manager of pre-admission testing from 2012 to 2015 and the vice president of surgical services from 2013 to 2015.
In addition to her primary pursuits, Ms. Petree found success with the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists' re-certification council as the vice president from 1997 to 1999, the vice-chairperson from 1998 to 2002 and the chairperson from 1999 to 2003. As a testament to her success, she was presented with the Excellence in Teaching Award in 1984, 1986, and 1990 and the Clinical Practitioner Award from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists in 1988. Moreover, Ms. Petree was honored with the Great North Carolina Nurses Award in 1992.
