Allen Born is currently Chairman and CEO of Born Investments, LLC, a private investment company with interests in venture capital and directional drilling for natural gas production. From 1993 until 1998 he was chairman and CEO of Alumax, Inc., a world leader in aluminum production and fabrication. Alumax, Inc. was acquired by Alcoa, Inc. in July 1998. Prior to this Mr. Born was Chairman and CEO of Amax, Inc. In 1993 Mr. Born engineered the unbundling of Amax. In this transaction all common shares of Alumax were distributed to the Amax shareholders at a value of $15 per share and the non aluminum assets (including Climax Molybdenum, Amax Coal, Amax Oil and Gas) were merged with Cyprus Minerals Company to form a new company, Cyprus‐Amax Inc., whose shares were distributed to Amax and Cyprus shareholders on a 50‐50 basis. Mr. Born was appointed Chairman of Cyprus‐Amax.
Mr. Born began his career in 1958 as an exploration geologist with El Paso Natural Gas Company, followed by nine years with Vanadium Corporation of America, Pima Mining Company and MolyCorp, respectively. He joined Amax Inc. in 1967 as a senior metallurgist at the Climax mine in Colorado, subsequently becoming Chief Metallurgist and Mine Manager. In 1976 Mr. Born was named President and CEO of Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Limited, headquartered in Vancouver, BC. In 1977 he was also elected to the positions of President of Amax of Canada and Climax Molybdenum of British Columbia.
In July 1981, Mr. Born joined Placer Development Limited as President and CEO. In May 1983 he was named to the additional post of Chairman of the Board. As CEO of Placer, Mr. Born explored for, developed and operated mines in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, the Philippines, Australia and Papua New Guinea. He also developed and operated oil and natural gas interests through a wholly owned subsidiary, Placer CEGO, both in Canada and the U.S. Placer Development was headquartered in Vancouver, B.C.
On June 1, 1985, Mr. Born joined Amax Inc. in New York City as President and Chief Operating Officer. He was elected CEO on January 7, 1986 and became Chairman, CEO and President on June 2, 1988. Amax was a worldwide metals, minerals and oil and gas producer with annual revenues of $5.0 billion.
Mr. Born is past Chairman of the Aluminum Association and the American Mining Congress and past Co‐Chairman of Cyprus‐Amax Minerals Company. He served on the Board of Directors of Placer Development Inc., Canada Tungsten Inc., Amax Inc., Alumax Inc., Cyprus‐Amax Inc., Inmet Mining Corporation, AK Steel Holding Corporation, Cyra Technologies, Morgan Bank of Canada and the British Columbia Business Council. He also served on the board of Trustees of the Robert Woodruff Arts Center and the Carter Center in Atlanta, GA and as Vice Chairman of the Kennedy Centers' Corporate Board in Washington, DC.
In 1986 Mr. Born was selected the CEO of the year in the mining industry and silver award winner in all North American industry by Financial World magazine. In 1987 he became only the third person to receive the Golden Nugget Award for professional accomplishment from the College of Science of the University of Texas at El Paso. He was selected a bronze award winner by Financial World in its CEO of the Year competitions in 1987, 1988 and 1989.
Mr. Born was presented the Daniel C. Jackling Award by the Society of Mining Engineers, awarded "for his leadership and ability to cut costs, streamline and rationalize corporate structures, and revitalize and refocus management efforts in the face of the worst commodities markets since the Great Depression." In 1990 the Wall Street Transcript named Mr. Born CEO of the year in the aluminum industry. Also in 1990 he received the Business Leadership Award from Citizens Union of New York City. Mr. Born was selected CEO of the Year in the mining industry for 1991 and 1992 by Financial World. In 1992 the Colorado School of Mines awarded Mr. Born a Doctor of Engineering degree. In 1993 Mr. Born was named outstanding alumnus of the University of Texas, El Paso.
Mr. Born is a native of Durango, Colorado, where he was born on July 4, 1933. After graduation from Durango High School in 1951, Mr. Born attended Fort Lewis College on a basketball scholarship and played for Ned Wallace in the 1951‐52 and 1952‐53 seasons. Mr. Born was drafted into the U.S. Army in October 1953 and served two years in the Far East Command. After his discharge, Mr. Born graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1958 with a degree in metallurgy and geology. Mr. Born is a past member of The Vancouver Club, The Sky Club of New York City and The Boulders Club in Carefree, Arizona. He and his wife, Pat, live in Denver, Colorado and Carefree, Arizona.
