Dr. Evelyn V. Gopez was most recently honored by the American Health Council in 2019 as the Best in Medicine for her dedication and passion to improve medical academic education.

Dr. Gopez is an award-winning pathologist and educator, teaching as a professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine since 2010. She previously taught at the University of Utah as an associate professor in 2003 and an assistant professor beginning in 1997. In that time, Dr. Gopez also served at the aforementioned university as the associate dean for the Office of Inclusion and Outreach at the School of Medicine from 2012 to 2019 and as an associate vice president of inclusion from 2012 to 2014 and an assistant dean from 2010 to 2012.
Dr. Gopez began her medical education in the Philippines, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Santo Tomas as well as a Doctor of Medicine in 1979. She continued her education at the University of Santo Tomas, working as a resident in anatomic pathology from 1980 to 1982.. She began her career in the United States as a psychiatry intern with Harvard Medical School from 1989 to 1990 before continuing as a resident in anatomic and clinical pathology with Berkshire Medical Center from 1990 to 1994.
Becoming a fellow in surgical pathology in 1996 and a fellow in cytopathology in 1995 from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Gopez is no stranger to prestigious recognition for her outstanding contributions to the medical field. She was most recently honored by the American Health Council in 2019 as the Best in Medicine for her dedication and passion to improve medical academic education. She was also an NIH scholar in 2015, and received both the Health Care Heroes Award in 2015 and the Advisor Service Award from the Latino Medical Student Association in 2013 and 2014. A listee in Strathmore's Who's Who in 2008, The Latino Medical Student Association also honored Dr. Gopez with a Certificate of Appreciation in 2011 and 2012 and a Certificate of Excellence in 2010 and 2011.
A member of the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Society of Clinical Pathology and the College of American Pathology, Dr. Gopez attributes her success to her persistence and passion for her work, ever eager to share her knowledge with others. She was very interested in pathology and enjoyed the extensive time she received to complete her work. When she gave up half of her practice to enter medical education, she and her staff decided that the best way to get more young people interested in pursuing a medical career was to provide a hands-on educational experience to her students. "If you like what you're doing, you'll be great at it," Dr. Gopez says, believing "everything else will fall into place."
