Dr. Sullivan initially entered the field while conducting postdoctoral research at the Saclay Nuclear Research Centre in France, from 1972 to 1974, after which he became a staff member between 1974 and 1982. Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, he pursued a formal education at the University of Otago in his native New Zealand, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science, with first class honors, in 1964 and a Master of Science in physics in 1965. Traveling to the United States in order to conclude his academic efforts, Dr. Sullivan obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from Harvard University in 1972.
During his career as an educator and researcher, Dr. Sullivan has been involved in numerous groundbreaking developments. He aided in the investigation of the fundamental properties of solid hydrogen and solid helium at very low temperatures, studied molecular motions using nuclear magnetic resonance, discovered the quadrupole glass phase of solid hydrogen, developed NMR techniques to study molecular dynamics at very low temperatures, and designed ultra-sensitive low-noise cryogenic UHF detectors, among other endeavors. Moreover, he has contributed numerous articles on quantum solids and nuclear magnetism to professional journals. Dr. Sullivan also served as one of the editors-in-chief of the Journal of Low Temperature Physics, a biweekly peer-reviewed journal which covers the subjects of low temperature physics and cryogenics.
An imminent scholar in his field, Dr. Sullivan has been presented with numerous accolades throughout the length of his career. Recognized as the Teacher of the Year by the University of Florida in 1988, he was likewise the recipient of the Prix Saintour by the College of France in 1978 and the Prix LaCaze by the French Academy of Sciences in 1982. He additionally accepted grants as a Fulbright exchange student, as well as a Frank Knox Memorial fellowship of Harvard University from 1965 to 1967.
