Dr. James Marshall Smith was named as a Distinguished Scientist by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and has contributed to more than 100 scientific publications.

Dr. Smith is a physicist and former public health official who has distinguished himself through more than 40 years of innovation in his field. His interest in science began during his early childhood, after having read the biography of Albert Einstein. He attended West Virginia University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1964, a Master of Science in 1966, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1969.

From 1969 until 1971, Dr. Smith was a physicist at the RCA Space Center in Princeton, N.J. Following that appointment, he served from 1971 until 1974 as senior research fellow at the Institute of Molecular Biophysics at Florida State University in Tallahassee. From 1974 until 1983, he was a research professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He then began his career with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), first as Chief of the Physical Agents Effects Branch at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in Cincinnati, followed by becoming the founding Chief of CDC's Radiation Studies Branch of the Center for Environmental Health in Atlanta.

Dr. Smith was named as a Distinguished Scientist by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and has contributed to more than 100 scientific publications. He is a former member of the editorial board of the Journal of Human and Ecological Risk Assessment and the Health Physics Journal. Among other accolades, Dr. Smith is the recipient of a 1994 U.S. Public Health Service Superior Service Award and a nomination for the Charles C. Shepard Science Award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition to his career in public health, Dr. Smith is a successful fiction writer. His first novel, "Silent Source," published in 2016, was a finalist for the Clive Cussler Grandmaster Award, and his 2017 book "Hybrid" was short-listed for the William Faulkner Wisdom Writing Competition.
