Daniel Clifford Adams, DMA, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Adams is a professor of music theory and composition at Texas Southern University in Houston, TX. A faculty member on campus since 1988, he formerly taught as an adjunct faculty member at both the University of Miami and Miami-Dade College. He has been teaching for 35 years.

During the course of his career in music, Dr. Adams has received commissions from several organizations, including The McCormick Percussion Group, The Gulf Coast Community Band and the Louisiana State University Percussion Ensemble. He has published numerous compositions and his music has been recorded with Capstone Records, Ravello, Potenza, Albany, Navona, Ablaze, Phasma, and Summit Records. He has also performed his music throughout the United States and abroad in such countries as Spain, Germany, Belgium, Sweden and Finland, among many others. Dr. Adams has authored many articles and reviews on topic related to 20th century percussion music, musical pedagogy and the music of Texas, as well as two entries published in the 2009 edition of "Oxford Encyclopedia of African-American History: 1896 to the Present" and a revision of the Miami, FL, entry of the "Grove Dictionary of American Music." In 2010, he authored his first book entitled "The Solo Snare Drum." Furthermore, Dr. Adams has served as a panelist and lecturer both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Adams has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the College Music Society, the composition committee for the Percussive Arts Society, on the board of directors of the National Association of Composers and as treasurer of the Texas chapter of the National Association of Composers of the USA. He is a past president and past member of the board of directors of the South Florida Composer Alliance, former member of the board of directors of the Houston Composers Alliance, former treasurer of the South Central chapter and former vice president of the College of Music Society, and former national council member of the Society of Composers, Inc.

Honored with a Music Composition Award from the American Society of Composers several times between 1987 and 2007, Dr. Adams was also a two-time award recipient of an award from the Percussive Arts Society in 1989 and 2000. He has also received several other grants and awards from such organizations as the American Symphony Orchestra League, the Greater Miami Youth Symphony and the Music Teachers National Association, and has been showcased in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.

Dr. Adams began playing percussion in junior high school, and by the time he was in high school, he had become interested in writing music, which ultimately led to his course of study in college. He has notably held a Bachelor of Music from Louisiana State University since 1978, a Master of Music from the University of Miami since 1981, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Illinois since 1985. Three of Dr. Adams' biggest influences and greatest mentors since college have included Dr. Dino Demetrios Constantinides, a music educator, composer and conductor, Salvatore Martirano, an American composer of contemporary classical music, and Dennis Kam, a professor from the University of Miami.
