During her tenure, she also flourished at the aforementioned college as the chair of the department of English, the coordinator of general education and the women's studies program, and the founder and director of the Paul Peck Humanities Institute, a college-Smithsonian partnership, funded primarily through a matching NEH grant. Prior to embarking upon her professional path, Dr. Goldenberg obtained a bachelor's degree, cum laude, at City College of New York in 1957, followed by a master's degree at the University of Arkansas in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Maryland in 1987.

King distinguished visiting scholar of holocaust studies at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. She was also active as a lecturer of Holocaust and genocide Studies, women's studies , and Jewish women's studies at the Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland. Her work as co-founder and director of the project integrating the scholarship of women and minorities into the curriculum of selected Maryland community colleges through the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education led to her appointment by the Ford Foundation as director of curriculum mainstreaming to include women and minorities in selected US community, HBC, and Native American colleges. Additionally, Dr. Goldenberg chaired the Title IX advisory committee, the Montgomery County Commission on Humanities and the Commission on Women.
A prolific author, Dr. Goldenberg has published seminal articles on women and the Holocaust and earned the Canadian Jewish Book Award in Holocaust Studies, and the Independent Publishers Award. A contributing editor and author of many books, she has also penned numerous reviews and articles on curriculum transformation, American Jewish women's literature and history, and college and university teaching content. Dr. Goldenberg notably co-edited "Experience and Expression: Women, the Nazis, and the Holocaust" with Elizabeth Baer in 2003, which explores an array of fascinating topics such as rescue and resistance, the treatment of Roma and Sinti women, the fate of female forced laborers, Holocaust politics and women's experiences of food and hunger in the camps.
Dr. Goldenberg's 2017 book "Before All Memory Is Lost: Women's Voices from the Holocaust" earned a Canadian Jewish Literary Award in Holocaust Literature, an Independent Publishers Award, and was a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award. Other books and articles to Dr. Goldenberg's credit include "Different Horrors, Same Hell: Gender and the Holocaust" in 2013 with Amy Shapiro, "Testimony, Narrative and Nightmare: Experience of Jewish Women in the Holocaust" in 2007 and "Anguished Hope: Holocaust Scholars Confront the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict" in 2008.
A leader of numerous civic and community initiatives, Dr. Goldenberg was active on the board of directors of the Jewish Community Council, the Maryland Humanities Council and the Arts and Humanities Council. A docent for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, she formerly participated on the board of directors of the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington. Elected to membership in the Cosmos Club, DC, she is a member of the Association of Jewish Studies, the National Council of Teachers of English, the Modern Language Association and the National Women's Studies Association.
Renowned for her exemplary work, Dr. Goldenberg has received numerous awards. Among them, she was presented with the Brilliant Diamond Award from Montgomery College in 2006, the Comcast Excellence in the Humanities Award in 2002 and the William H. Meardy Faculty Award from the Association of Community College Trustees in 1996.
