Dr. Fintel is renowned as a cardiologist, a medical scientist, and a medical educator with more than 40 years of service to his patients and discipline. He was drawn to medicine in order to contribute to scientific inquiries that would improve the health of many, and treasures the patient relationships he has cultivated over his years of practice. He initially pursued an education at Yale University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude, in 1975. Dr. Fintel concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Medicine in the Health Science and Technology Program of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, magna cum laude, in 1979.
From 1979 to 1982, Dr. Fintel completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He further flourished as a fellow in cardiology at Johns Hopkins University from 1982 to 1985. He came to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 1985, where he served as an associate director of medical intensive care from 1985 to 1992 and the director of the coronary care unit from 1992 to 2010. He has remained very active as a clinical cardiologist, with an active inpatient and outpatient cardiology referral practice. During this time, he was additionally active at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine as an associate in medicine from 1985 to 1987, an assistant professor in medicine from 1987 to 1993 and an associate professor from 1993 to 2006. Since 2006, Dr. Fintel has excelled as a professor of medicine at Northwestern University, and continues to teach, perform medical research, and publish.
Dr. Fintel has been certified in internal medicine, cardiology, nuclear cardiology, and critical care medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. A frequent contributor to professional journals, he was presented with a 1979 Harold Lampert Biomedical Research Prize from Harvard Medical School, among other accolades. He has been repeatedly recognized as a Top Doctor in Chicago and nationally during the past 10 years. Likewise, Dr. Fintel is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the American College of Physicians. Dr. Fintel lectures widely on multiple topics in cardiology throughout the US and internationally, and is in active demand as a speaker.
