Ms. Leslie has distinguished herself as the president of Leslie Consulting and Associates since 2005. Founded to support educators in their quest to build trust and strong alliances within their communities, she formerly taught at every level of education in both public and private schools from preschool through university for 14 years. Ms. Leslie taught high school in Washington, middle school in Oregon and Hawaii and was the owner and director of Pohick Forest Preschool in Lorton, Virginia, between 1969 and 1976. In 1979 Leslie began a career in educational administration and public relations serving in this capacity in three different school districts in the northwest-Gresham, Spokane and Beaverton. In 2000 she retired from Beaverton School District joining KSA Plus Communications in Arlington, VA as a senior consultant. She worked with school districts and non-profits throughout the nation until 2005 when she launched her own business.
Ms. Leslie has facilitated workshops, consulted and given speeches in communications and engagement strategies internationally and in most states for educational organizations, government agencies and private sector businesses. She specializes in community building, social research, conflict mediation, facilitation, strategic planning and public engagement strategy development. She believes engagement strategies result in legitimizing different points of view, deeper conversations and better decisions ultimately leading to understanding and greater responsibility for decisions that affect those engaged.
Widely published, she co-authored the NSPRA workshop kits "Lighting the Fire: A Process for Building Staff Morale and Excellence"; "Staff Recognition: Unlocking the Potential for Success"; and "Team Building 2000: Managing Change Together." She developed "Chalkboard's Running Start: Reaching the Hard-To Reach," a toolkit for parents and trainers of parents. Additionally Leslie co-authored the textbooks, "The Politics of Authentic Engagements" and "The Politics of Authentic Engagement Tools for Engaging Stakeholders in Ensuring Student Success." Both books are available on Amazon. She also contributed articles to various national educational journals.
In 1964, Ms. Leslie received a BA in Communications and Spanish at the University of Hawaii. Thereafter, she received a Bachelor's of Education at the University of Puget Sound in 1966. Twenty years later, she attained a Master in Management Studies at Marylhurst College in 1986. She is certified in School Administration and accredited in public relations.
A leader of numerous community initiatives, Ms. Leslie is a former board chair, board member and current trainer for the White Water Institute, a nonprofit organization which uses a river experience to apply principles of living systems to human systems to guide and navigate change. She served on the board of directors of the Washington County YMCA in Beaverton, was a public relations appointee for the Governor's Commission on School Finance and provided her expertise as an advisor for several political campaigns.
Ms. Leslie served as vice president of Women in Communications in 1989, as northwest vice president 1987-1990 and president of the National School Public Relations Association 1991-1992, She is also a member of the Public Relations Society of America and the Oregon School Public Relations Association.
Renowned for her work, Ms. Leslie attributes her professional accomplishments to a team approach including the many people with whom she has worked and with whom she continues to work as well as her family. She was presented with The President's Award from the National School Public Relations Association-honoring lifetime achievement. She also received several other recognitions from other organizations, including a Gold Medallion, several Awards of Excellence and a Golden Achievement Award. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Leslie has been included in the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the West. She would like to be remembered as a systems thinker who honors all points of view, holds deep respect for a multitude of perspectives and as one who has worked diligently to help others bridge racial, economic and cultural divides.
