Dr. Mauldin is renowned as a retired professor of mathematics with more than 40 years of excellence in his field. Interested in science and mathematics as a child, he did not realize that he could be a mathematician until he entered higher education, and had initially planned to embark upon a career in engineering. He pursued an education at the University of Texas on a football scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1965 while playing on the 1963 national Championship team. He graduated as a Phi Beta Kappa and was selected as an All-Southwest conference defensive end in 1964. He then received the University of Texas Chancellor's Fellowship which allowed him to continue his graduate studies concluding with a Master of Arts in 1966 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1969.
From 1969 to 1977, Dr. Mauldin flourished as an assistant professor and an associate professor at the University of Florida. He subsequently found success at the University of North Texas as an associate professor from 1977 to 1979 and a professor from 1979 to 1988. Dr. Mauldin notably excelled as a regents professor from 1988 until his retirement from academia in 2011.
He served as an editor of "Advances in Mathematics" and the "Real Analysis Exchange." Dr. Mauldin is the author of more than 160 articles and books. Most recently in 2015 he edited the second edition of "The Scottish Book," the famous collection of problems formulated at the Scottish Café in Lvov, Poland in the 1930's. He practiced collaboration as a progressive form in developing mathematical ideas. He had the honor of working with many outstanding collaborators including P. Erdos, S. Ulam and D. Blackwell. He and S. Jackson solved the famous lattice problem of H. Steinhaus which had been open for over 50 years. He has additionally consulted for many years for clients within his field, including the Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Center for Communications Research in La Jolla, where he continues to consult. He supervised 18 doctoral students during his tenure at the University of North Texas. A member of the American Mathematical Society, Dr. Mauldin received grants from the National Science Foundation from 1978 until 2009.
