A literary and cultural studies scholar currently serving as a professor in the department of Spanish and Portuguese at New York University, Ms. Labanyi celebrates more than 50 years in academia. Born in England, she began lecturing at Birkbeck College, University of London in the Spanish department in 1971 and later served as a senior lecturer, reader and full professor within the department. During her tenure at Birkbeck, she simultaneously served for five years as the director of the Institute of Romance Studies at the University of London's School of Advanced Study where she was most notably responsible for developing a master's program in Cultural Memory. Additionally, Ms. Labanyi held an appointment at the University of Southampton as a professor in the department of modern languages between 2001 and 2005 before immigrating to the U.S.
An alumna of Oxford University in England, Ms. Labanyi received a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with honors in 1967. Ms. Labanyi's research and teaching over the course of her career have focused on Spanish literature of the 18th to 21st centuries, and on Spanish visual culture, especially cinema of the early Franco period. Particular interests have been popular culture, gender studies, memory studies, and the history of emotions.
Widely published on Spanish literature and culture, Ms. Labanyi has authored five books, including "Gender and Modernization in the Spanish Realist Novel" in 2000, "Spanish Literature: A Very Short Introduction" in 2010, and "Spanish Culture from Romanticism to the Present: Structures of Feeling" in 2019. Among her seven edited volumes are "Spanish Cultural Studies: An Introduction. The Struggle for Modernity" in 1995, "A Companion to Spanish Cinema" in 2012, and "Engaging with the Emotions in Spanish Culture and History" in 2016. In 2000, Ms. Labanyi was responsible for founding the Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies, of which she is currently editor; in 2001, she additionally founded the Journal of Romance Studies. She is also the general editor of the "Remapping Cultural History" book series published by Berghahn Books.
Ms. Labanyi has been affiliated with several professional organizations, including the Modern Language Association, the Society of Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies and the Society for Cinema and Media Studies. In 2017, Ms. Labanyi was honored with a Tecmerin Award for contribution to Spanish cinema studies by the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid, Spain. She has also secured several grants, including from the European Science Foundation, the Arts and Humanities Research Board and the British Academy/Leverhulme Trust, of which she was a senior research fellow from 1993 to 1995. In 2005 she was elected a member of the British Academy. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Labanyi has been showcased in the 65th, 68th, 69th and 70th editions of Who's Who in America.
