Having sung since her early childhood, Ms. Chen-Maxham has distinguished herself as a classical opera singer, choral conductor, and teacher. At the age of nine, she became involved with the community youth choir in her hometown of Taichung, Taiwan, where she remained for eight years as she learned the fundamentals of music. Since then, Ms. Chen-Maxham went on to become a leading soprano in the ensemble of the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern in Germany for six consecutive seasons. She also performed with the Michigan Opera Theatre, the Hawaii Opera, the Dayton Opera Theater in Ohio, the Taipei Opera Theater, the Stadttheater Gelsenkirchen in Germany and the Stadttheater Saint Gallen in Switzerland. She has performed more than 20 operatic leading roles and has sung concerts and recitals in the U.S., France, Germany, Switzerland and her native country of Taiwan.
Grateful to be able to promote love and peace in the world through her performances and teaching, Ms. Chen-Maxham is equally grateful for the opportunity to promote her country, her language and her culture through her singing. Some of her proudest career achievements have included performing the leading role Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute at the age of 21. Ms. Chen-Maxham likewise enjoyed singing in the presidential palace for President Lee of Taiwan and singing a leading role on stage of the San Francisco Opera alongside the revered late French singer Regine Crespin. Since 2002, Ms. Chen-Maxham has been an adjunct music faculty member of vocal instruction at Rutgers University in Newark. She is also a teaching artist at the Chinese Christian Church Music Institute of Worship. Ms. Maxham notably co-directed the Joy of Singing Vocal Studio in Edison, New Jersey, and actively hosts various clinics and workshops in the US and Canada.
Ms. Chen-Maxham was selected for the Merola Opera Program of the San Francisco Opera and was awarded an Adler Fellowship with the same company for two years. She notably received a Bachelor of Arts at the National Taiwan Normal University in Taiwan in 1980, followed by a Master of Music in vocal performance at the Manhattan School of Music in New York 1984. Aligned with the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the National Music Teachers Association, Ms. Chen-Maxham was the voice chairman of the New Jersey Music Teachers Association.
A winner of the San Francisco Opera Auditions Grand Finals and a Second Prize winner in the female division of the International Concours de Chant de Paris in 1990, Ms. Chen-Maxham was selected as the representing classical singer in the 2007 book "The Representatives of Twentieth Century Taiwanese," which was published in Taiwan. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women. A proud adherent of her Christian faith, Ms. Maxham is happily married to her husband, John Maxham, a baritone and an ordained minister. They are the parents of two children: Julia and John Preston.
