Since 1986, Dr. Yale H. Caplan has been an adjunct professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Maryland.

Dr. Caplan is a toxicologist and educator with more than 50 years of dedication invested in his field. A graduate of the University of Maryland, he completed a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy in 1963 and a Doctor of Philosophy in medicinal chemistry in 1968. Initially intending to pursue a career in pharmaceutical research and development, Dr. Caplan worked as a research associate in oncology and cell biology at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore from 1968 to 1970. While at Sinai Hospital, he accepted a position in the Medical Examiners office, where his interest in toxicology began.

From 1970 until 1974, Dr. Caplan excelled as an assistant toxicologist for the Maryland office of the chief medical examiner. In 1974, he advanced to become the chief toxicologist for the state of Maryland, where he would serve through 1991. Furthermore, he served as the director of forensic and special toxicology at the National Center for Forensic Science, a division of Maryland Medical Laboratory (later Quest Diagnostics) between 1992 and 2000. Since 1986, Dr. Caplan has been an adjunct professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Maryland. He is currently an independent consultant in his field.

Dr. Caplan is the author of "Garriott's Medicolegal Aspects of Alcohol," published in 2015, and a contributor of chapters to books and articles to several professional journals. He has been a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Analytical Toxicology since 1976, the Journal of Forensic Sciences since 1984, and Forensic Sciences Review since 1989. Dr. Caplan is a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, where he sat on the board of directors from 1986 to 1989, and garnered a laudable reputation as the president between 1987 and 1988. In 2019, he was presented with the Gradwohl Medallion, the Academy's highest award, for exceptional lifetime contributions to forensics. Dr. Caplan is likewise a fellow of the American Board of Forensic Toxicology.
