Dr. Schuker is a psychiatrist and educator who has been affiliated with Columbia University for 50 years. Having worked as a training and supervising analyst at the Columbia University Psychoanalytic Center for Training and Research since 1985, she has taught many new courses for candidates on gender and sexuality, on development, and other areas. She has also taught seminars for graduate analysts on the psychology of women, and on clinical dilemmas in psychoanalytic therapy. She has served on many committees including over a decade of service on the Executive Committee. She has been a consistent active psychoanalytic supervisor since 1985. Additionally, she has served as an associate clinical professor of psychiatry in the college of physicians and surgeons since 1990.
While serving as an attending psychiatrist at the University Health Service (1969-89), early on she was also the psychiatric consultant to the University's Women's Counseling Project and was affiliated with St. Luke's Hospital. During this time from the late 1960's through the 70'¥he was very involved with women's psychology and health, and pioneered the creation of the first rape intervention program in Manhattan, to provide immediate volunteer support, treatment, and medical and psychological care, initially located at St. Luke's Hospital. She became the program's first director (1977-80). She also wrote several papers on female psychology and became aware of this changing expanding field. In 1991 she was the senior editor of the book "Female Psychology: An Annotated Psychoanalytic Bibliography" in which she notably authored several chapters as well. Dr. Schuker has since authored articles and delivered lectures on topics related to gender and female psychology, and has served a reviewer for several books.
Dr. Schuker received a Bachelor of Arts at Swarthmore College in 1961 and a Doctor of Medicine at Columbia University in 1965. Additional educational pursuits include an internship at Mount Sinai Hospital and a residency in psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, holding a certificate in psychoanalytic medicine from the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. Dr. Schuker is additionally licensed to practice in New York and California, and holds a license for handling narcotics.
Dr. Schuker is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. She is also a member and former certified alternate delegate to the executive council of the American Psychoanalytic Association, member and past president of the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine and member and past president of the Alumni Association of the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center. Dr. Schuker notably received a George E. Daniels Merit Award in 1999 from the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine.
In 2019, Dr. Schuker was a 50-Year Life honoree of the American Psychiatric Association in recognition of significant contributions to the field of psychiatry. She previously received a Founders Award from the Crime Victims Treatment Center in 2002. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Schuker has been featured in close to 40 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
