After spending four years as a faculty member at the Instituto Adventista Florida in Buenos Aires, Dr. Rasi immigrated to the United States in 1962, whereupon he commenced working for the Pacific Press Publishing Association as an assistant editor. In 1969, he became a faculty member at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, first as an assistant and associate professor of modern languages and later as a full professor and the dean of the school of graduate studies. Returning to the Pacific Press in 1978, Dr. Rasi served as the chief editor of international publications and as the vice president of editorial development between 1984 and 1986. The Pacific Press is one of two major Seventh-day Adventist publishing houses in North America.
Dr. Rasi joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church in his youth and in 1980 was ordained as a Minister. He subsequently contributed for an additional 15 years as an associate world director and director of education for the church's General Conference before ultimately retiring in 2002. During his career, Dr. Rasi provided his expertise as the executive director for the Institute for Christian Teaching between 1987 and 2002.
Widely published, Dr. Rasi excelled as a contributing editor of the "Handbook of Latin America Studies," 1972-1982, produced by the Library of Congress, the editor of seven volumes of "Comentario Biblico Adventista" from 1978 to 1990, the author of the three volume set "The Life of Jesus" published in 1984-1985, the co-editor of "Meeting the Secular Mind" in 1985 and the founder and editor-in-chief of the journal "College and University Dialogue" between 1989 and 2007. In recent years, he co-edited "Understanding Creation" in 2011, "Always Prepared" in 2012 and "Entrusted" in 2013. Additionally, Dr. Rasi has contributed numerous articles to publications on modern Hispanic literature, cultural issues and religious trends. He continues to serve as the founder and chief editor of the Adventus 21 Editorial Consortium since 2010.
Born in Buenos Aires, Dr. Rasi received a Bachelor of Arts at the Instituto Superior del Profesorado in 1960. He later acquired a Master of Arts at San Jose State University in the U.S. in 1966, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy at Stanford University in 1971. Dr. Rasi has since received four honorary doctorate degrees between 1999 and 2015 from Peru Union University, River Plate Adventist University in Argentina, the University of Montemorelos in Mexico and Andrews University.
Inspired to become a teacher while in secondary school, Dr. Rasi was mentored by several outstanding teachers. During his literary career, he became well acquainted with the literary production of Jorge Luis Borges. Born in the same city of Buenos Aires as Dr. Rasi, Mr. Borges was a famous Argentine short-story writer, essayist, poet, translator and key figure in Spanish-language and universal literature. Dr. Rasi had the pleasure of meeting him on several occasions and wrote his dissertation on one facet of his work.
Dr. Rasi is member of the Instituto Internacional de Literatura Iberoamericana (IILI). The ILLI is dedicated to promoting Latin American literatures, cultures and literary criticism through its congresses, the well-known "Revista Iberoamericana" and its editorial series. The organization is based on the department of Hispanic languages and literatures at the University of Pittsburgh.
A National Endowment of the Humanities postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University between 1975 and 1976, Dr. Rasi has since become a celebrated Marquis listee who has been showcased in approximately 45 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the West. In retirement, he continues to serve his profession as executive secretary of the Foundation for Adventist Education since 2005. Dr. Rasi has also maintained activity as the host of the Dialogo al Punto television program in Spanish since 2013 and the director of the LLBN Latino channel since 2014.
