Dr. Joseph W. Dickey received a Governor Committee on Employment of the Handicapped Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

A retired physicist and senior research scientist, Dr. Dickey found success on behalf of Johns Hopkins University in the materials science department between 1998 and 2009. There, he conducted extensive experimental research in the areas of physical acoustics, and theoretical study in elastic scattering ultra-sonics and structural dynamics. He also taught dynamic systems, acoustics and vibrations, as well as mathematical methods courses. Dr. Dickey was previously employed by the David Taylor Research Center, where he contributed for more than 30 years as a senior research scientist.
A congressional science fellow of the Acoustical Society of America during the 1984 to 1985 academic year, Dr. Dickey also distinguished himself as a keynote speaker at several international conferences and was a visiting associate professor at the U.S. Naval Academy. As a seasoned scientist, he notably developed sensing systems and holds several patents on non-constructive evaluation. As a result of his studies, Dr. Dickey has contributed more than 100 articles to various scientific journals and papers, including "Technical Advances in Engineering and Their Impact on Detection, Diagnostics and Prognostic Methods."
In addition to his impeccable career in physics, Dr. Dickey formed his company, Turnings, in 1984 to create and sell his woodworking art pieces. Nationally recognized for his artwork, he has been showcased in numerous public and private collections. He also co-established the Woodturning School and Co-op at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis. Among Dr. Dickey's other passions is his band, Shenandoah Run. A group comprised of nine talented musicians, Shenandoah Run covers American folk music ranging from the 1960s to contemporary times, and has produced several CDs.
An alumnus of Drexel University, Dr. Dickey received a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1963. He subsequently attended the University of New Hampshire, from which he acquired a Master of Science in physics in 1965. Dr. Dickey concluded his academic efforts in 1976, whereupon he graduated from Catholic University with a Doctor of Philosophy in physics.
Among his professional memberships, Dr. Dickey is member of the Galesville Astrophysical Society and the American Institute of Physics. He is also an elected fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, a treasurer and board member of the American Association of Woodturners, and a founding member of the Chesapeake Woodturners. Additionally, he is a member of the Guild of Bookworkers, the International Bluegrass Musicians Association and Sigma Xi. Likewise, Dr. Dickey has played an instrumental role with the Maryland Federation of Art as the president and a member on the board of directors, serving two appointments between 1992 and 1995 and from 2005 until 2008.
In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Dickey received a Governor Committee on Employment of the Handicapped Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been included in the 63rd edition of Who's Who in America and the second edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
