Dr. Paul Song is one of the founders of the scientific field of Space Weather.

With more than 30 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Song has excelled as a professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell since 2003. Prior to this appointment, he held the position of an associate professor at the aforementioned university from 2000 to 2003. Previously, he served as an associate research scientist at the University of Michigan from 1996 to 2000. Dr. Song began his career as a scientist in the High Altitude Observatory in Boulder, Colorado, from 1991 to 1996.
Before embarking upon his professional path, Dr. Song pursued an education at Shandong University, earning a Bachelor of Science in infrared remote sensing in 1982. He continued his academic efforts at the Chinese Academy of Sciences with a Master of Science in space physics in 1986. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Song concluded his studies at the University of California Los Angeles, in 1991, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in geophysics and space physics.
Beyond his academic responsibilities within the field, Dr. Song has participated in numerous endeavors in his scientific circles. Since 2013, he has contributed to the University of Massachusetts Lowell as the director of the Center for Atmospheric Research. He has further flourished as the director of the University of Massachusetts Lowell's Space Science Laboratory. Likewise, Dr. Song held the role of a science consultant for the Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1990 to 1992.
Dr. Song found success with his written works as well, having edited "Physics of the Magnetopause" in 1995, "Space Weather" in 2001 and "Radio Sounding and Plasma Physics" in 2007. He has also authored articles for such publications as the Journal of Geophysical Research, Astrophysical Journal Letters and Space Science Reviews, among many others. Moreover, Dr. Song remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise, including the American Geophysical Union, for which he was the chairman of the North America Regional Advisory Committee from 1998 to 2000.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Song has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. In 2001, he was recognized as an Excellent Referee by the American Geophysical Union. Furthermore, he was presented with the Outstanding Thesis Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1987, the Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 2015 and many grants from NASA, NSF, and US Air Force. He currently serves as the Principal Investigator for the TNT instrument on the DSX Satellite. Additionally, Dr. Song was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
Inspired by his family, who fostered his interest in philosophy and economics, Dr. Song's career prospered following the upheavals of the Cultural Revolution in China, having worked in a factory throughout his formative years. He was notably mentored by Christopher Russell, a professor at the University of California Los Angeles. Among the many highlights of his career, Dr. Song is incredibly proud to have shared so many of his theories with publications within his field, many of which have been cited by a great number of peers.
